The keys are simple: Whatever keyword/phrase you are targeting, build that into the ad, have a landing page with those words/phrase. Set your campaigns/ads to rotate, not based on best performing.

Exact phrase target one or two very related words, don't go for master words and don't do a ton of keywords in one ad group/campaign. Enter $1 per click, create your ads to pull clicks to jump the click through rate up.

Wait until a handful of clicks come in, adjust the bid rate to match the cost per click. Once you start to slip into your spot 4-7 and prices have lowered - adjust your ads to be better quality - but leave the higher click through rate ads going.

The tough part is finding the keywords/phrases to target... that don't cost you both arms, or words that don't have 10 pages of ads on them.

Great tips, TheDoc. In terms of finding keywords/phrases to target, Spyfu.com and other related sites are good places to start. Start with the words the competition are targeting and research lower priced terms from there.
