Im thinking of doing that. but offices in Boston are ridiculously expensive.
What difference did you notice from working in an office and working at home?

Reak AGV 03-23-2009 03:59 PM

No I simply can't take 5 minutes to walk the fucking dog, I'M WORKING!! RRRR ;)

teh ghey 03-23-2009 04:01 PM

People in my family had me babysit every monday all day from 10AM to 6:30PM because I was home.
I couldnt do 5 seconds of work i had to entertain him around all day, take him to the park, feed him, play tag, out for games cuz he gets bored easily. No money of course, family obligation.
This lasted for 6 months then they started asking for Fridays too.
I put a stop to it, and when I did it caused a huge family blowup where *I* was the asshole.

grrrr, fuck them.

Snake Doctor 03-23-2009 06:45 PM

But......but.......but what's the point of being your own boss and working from home if you're not willing to use your freedom and flexibility to help your friends and family?

You sure are stuck up now

qxm 03-23-2009 06:57 PM

mmm I think people imagine or have this concept that when you work from home you have basically no obligations and pay no heed to anyone other than yourself... many may consider working from home as "true freedom" ... but that is overrated or maybe even misunderstood ....

The only way I would kick around and not care about business is if I was making big money (50k+ a month at least) ... and even then I am sure I would be juicing it as much as I can and not taking even 5 mins off.....

I work full-time from home and I understand all this bullshit...

corbu 03-23-2009 07:02 PM

i can spare 5 minutes if my girl was gonna blow me

TurboAngel 03-23-2009 07:07 PM

People will just come over no matter what time of the day. I get calls at all hours of the night/day. :( I love the ones that want you to teach them how to work online. LOL

My favorite was when I left my last job to do this full time one of the guys I worked with comes over to me and is talking to me about it. He says, "So how about sliding me some money?" I say, "For what?" He says, "because we are friends." I say, "Tell me this, when you get off work what do you do in the afternoon/evening? Do you watch TV, hang with friends, read?" He tells me about how he watched tv shows and movies, he reads a little. He goes to the elks lodge and plays cards and has an all around happy home life. I then say, "That sounds nice. Me? I got home and work for 8-10 hours and I have been doing just that every day for the last 9 months. While you play cards and watch TV, I am working. While you watch a movie or read a magazine, I am working." He just says, "Oh, I didn't realize it was that hard. . . does this mean you won't give me any money?"

It was classic.

Elli 03-23-2009 07:23 PM

Oh, and this is a priceless one I got a few days ago:

"I called you five hours ago and you're still at the computer? What do you do with your day? You haven't got off your butt yet!"

Gah!

DaddyHalbucks 03-23-2009 07:25 PM

"What part of the word 'WORK' do you not understand?"

I'm sorta lucking since I'm single, live alone, and have no friends :1orglaugh.. people tend to leave me alone.. I could never go to a office cause i tend to work with my laptop all day long not just 9 to 5 and I think I would spend way too much time at the office to get the same thing done that I do from home

I'd gladly do that if I knew they'd be willing to work.

A friend of mine has been unemployed for over a year with a law degree in hand. She was selling stuff on a flea market a few months ago even and generally broke as fuck. I got a couple of small but well paid grunt gigs that I was just too busy to take and offered them to her and she stood me up three times. :upsidedow

But you make your own schedule. You can make time, can't you?

what all of those people fail to realize is that here is only 24 hours in a day so no I can't "make time" :disgust
I can only re-organize my day just so much :Oh crap
And I'm with Sarah, the more interruptions I have the harder it becomes to focus
I hate losing my train of thought :upsidedow

Yeah it's like they think in 10 minutes you can show them how to start placing tiny classified ads from your one bedroom apartment...... :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

I actually have a stack of old books I keep just for those times. HTML, PS, Javascript, etc....I point them to the stack of books and tell them after they've finished them all, I'll show them how to make money with those skills, but they have to learn those skills first.

I never hear about it again.

hehe I tell them to look up "affiliate programs" online and let me know if they have questions. if they're serious, (so far only one has been), they come back in a month with some decent results.

I hear that man.. It makes a *HUGE* difference, hell for a lot of people it even generates more productivity either paying for the office or gaining a little more money :)

HB|Sergio 03-24-2009 03:22 AM

Imposible work from home. Rent office and you will be happy. Home is to many thinks you need to do. In office you can relax and work hard witout any outside warnings

DutchTeenCash 03-24-2009 03:23 AM

yeah you wouldnt believe how many ppl ask that

And that has increased lately. I have just started to tell them there isn't real money in it anymore and they go away.

pornocruto 03-24-2009 05:00 AM

This is one of the reason i work from an office, sure being at home has its comforts and you may think
you're saving money on renting a work space, but in fact really you can lose money with all the bullshit
distractions.... You know the stupid shit like, can you take the trash out, can you help with the washing... Blah.

you know damn well if you are coding up a page or uploading a member update or something you will NOT just stop right where you are and leave the house.

I leave the house numerous times a day, sometimes just to get out and take a walk or something, but fact is when we are working, we dont just stop and go.

It takes me a couple hours to do my emails sometimes, and ive had family call and need a ride or something and ive told them I had to do somethings first.

simple as that, I do not drop everything I am doing to come pick up someone because their car broke down etc... in fact, I told they they shold have "AAA" like I do... most of the time when family calls I am in ICQ message or discussing something with client, no way im just going to say "sry gotta go afk we discuss money later" LOL

and if im designing or in "design mode" it takes me a few minutes to snap out of it, i usually have music on LOUD and in my zone and focused, cant just stop, gotta decompress.

Gerco 03-24-2009 06:11 AM

VERY very hard to work from home. In my case I have a 2.5 year old, a ! year old and a stay at home wife. Every 10 minutes or so I hear "can you come here for a bit when your not busy" Um, not busy? Whens that? It's hard because you feel like you should go and take care of what ever your being asked to do, and then you have to start all over again when you get back to your desk. (Or you get totally sidetracked and the work day is wasted)

Don't get me wrong, the benefits outweigh and negatives. I get to spend time with my family everyday, I get to be a part of my girls growing up and actually be a central part of that. I have the ability to do what ever the hell I want without someone looking over my shoulder telling me what to do. I get up, keep my pajamas on, grab coffee and am working in minutes.

But, I am building a separate office right now. Detached from my house and it will be locate on the other side of my property just so I can cut down on the "little" interruptions.

JayDeeZee 03-24-2009 06:36 AM

WOW - I can relate to everyone here.

My wife just put the babies play pen in my home office.

Sarah_Jayne 03-24-2009 06:41 AM

My husband is great but he doesn't really get it either. He goes out to work and when he comes home asks stuff like why all the laundry hasn't been done while he was away or something like that. I point out that I was just as much at work as he was and I didn't see him floating home from the office to do them. 'But you work from home, I work in an office!'.

pah..

For me the most amount of work i have to do every day is check my stats and return emails. I spend 2 hours a day in the gym and the rest of my time doing whatever i feel like. But obviously its different for everyone, but i like the freedom i would hate being under the same restrictions as a normal job but stuck in your house all day.

Anyway because you work from home you are able to go and do something where as the normal person if they just walked out of their workplace they would get fired. This is the reasoning why people used to ask me to do stuff and i agree to an extent. But if you are honest if you really wanted to when someone asks you to go do something for 10 minutes you could, think how much time you spend on gfy?

clearly, all work from home folk can procrastinate WHEn we want to, heheh

but this thread is not about that, its about those who think we sit around and can be called to do whatever, whenever and that shit aggrivates me and i get it from family too, they think we sit around not doing anything all day and its far from the truth, im up before them and working later than them. LOL

Pandemos 03-24-2009 07:04 AM

Related to all this is people who can't accept that because you work on a computer and haven't pulled a 12 hour shift down a coal mine you can't possibly be tired at the end of the day.
