				In your office
what kinda non essential stuff do you have in your offices? do you have motivational posters or plants or stuff like that, or is it strictly cables, routers, and all business? oh also.... any windows or extra rooms within the room like a kitchenette or bathroom or bar or sound booth or anything? (I've seen offices with all of these things believe it or not) (I'm just curious about something)

				 | I basically have nothing here but the essentials and a ton of equipment. Like my home, the walls are bare but I think the architecture makes up for it a bit. Eventually I'd like to add a lounge area at the front of the office, which is now occupied by Sun boxes and heaps of direct marketing materials. |

				 | Hmmm. Everyone seems to have all this shit. I have a desk, 2 computers, a telephone/fax, copy machine, a window that looks out over my back property, and lots of empty unused space in the room. nothing on the walls, no facy sound system, no tv, no distractions. I'm a minimalist. |

does it help to have that kinda stuff around so it's not so... stark I guess, for lack of a better word right now? Can there be too much of it? or is it better to just strip it down to bare essentials and leave that kinda stuff out completely? I'm undecided either way.... I kinda like having extra non essential stuff around to lighten things up a little.... but ahhh fuck, I don't know. I think a window is a big help though.... can't imagine being in a room all day with no freaking windows. I hate those cheesy motivational posters too.... but doesn't have to be specifically those types.... could be any kind of large prints, paintings, posters, etc.... or is just bare walls better?

				 | Since the office is in our living room at the moment, there are loads of non-essential items about. TV, piano, sofa, stereo, etc. The most non-essential items though - ones I wouldn't be without no matter what happens - are the cats. Their antics take my mind off working when its getting to me.

As for bars, sound rooms, blah blah blah... If I don't use it to make money, I don't need it in my office. If I'm going to entertain guests for the evening, I have a full wet bar in my basement, complete with game room... so if I need to take a break I just go down there. But in the office it's all business. Except of course when I come round here. Then there's SOME fun involved. The view I have from my window is enough to keep me relaxed. I dont even hang "art" on the walls. They're just painted light gray and left alone... I used to rent office space when I had several employees. But now I handle 99% of operations from my one-room home office. The key for me is space. I wouldn't wanna be trapped in a 10x10 room all day. I've got lots of empty space here. Gives me the feeling of "endless possibilities". | |

				 | Frank, that office space in incredible! I'm stuck in the 3rd bedroom in my house (one of the reasons I rented here)... three desks, a bookcase jammed in one corner, 4 printers, fax machine, telephones, music CDs all over the place (neat is not my strong suit, except in my specific "work area". I even took the closet doors down so I'd have space for the file cabinet and office supply storage. The nicest feature is the huge window, but I usually keep the blind down so I don't get the reflection in the monitor. As for decor, there are posters all over the walls (NASCAR and Superbikes, mostly), crystals and candles sitting around, a few plants, and the cat ventures in and out at will, as does my teenage son. I tried the "stripped down and bare" approach, but I spend 16+ hours a day in here, and I started feeling like I was in a jail cell. I also have a "land locked" computer (no net connection) in the livingroom for those times when my son complains that he hasn't seen me in three or four days

As far as my work area, I took over one wall in our bedroom, next to the door so that I can look down the hall into the living room and keep an eye on my daughter. I have a big IKEA-ish rack desk, and it looks like a novelty store exploded all over it: postcards, action figures, Happy Meal toys, little stuffed animals. My 17" monitor is set at a weird angle so that I can sit parallel to the desk with my feet up on a stool, and I put the mouse/pad on a barstool next to my right hand and plop the keyboard in my lap. I have to have it set up so that I suffer the least pain from sitting still for so long, and the desk top is littered with med bottles, tylenol, the ever-present IcyHot, an infrared massager, heating pads and all kinds of hand/wrist braces and knee braces. So it not only looks like a novelty store exploded, but possibly a medical-supply place as well...
