Something I do not understand about Sirius. They claim to have ~ 19 million subscribers, and yet the lose money. If there are 19M subscribers, each paying about $14 per month then that would be $2.6 billion in revenues per month, or $31 billion per year.

And yet they lose money.

Am I missing something...?

They borrowed a ton of cash and paid prem talent a tremendous amount of money... now, they have a new partner that owns 40% of the co. The restructured alot of debt and delayed some other debt. The reason for the massive run is the apple deal that is going to provide content to ipods... finally, I'm making a few bucks. My first buys were at 6, then 4... I sold at a loss. Now, I'm gonna sit back and watch this shit move

Their subscriber numbers are also way off, as both XM and Sirius have a habit of keeping canceled subscriptions activated to artificially boost their numbers. For instance, I have like 5 XM units that I used to keep in my stores that still work, even though I canceled them in 2006. I don't get billed for them, and I have called a few times and have been told the subs are canceled.

Back in 2006, Opie and Anthony were suspended from XM for letting a homeless guy get on the air and say a few harsh things about Condoleeza Rice. Thousands of listeners canceled their XM radios in protest, and their units were still working weeks after they were canceled...

They have a lot of very expensive talent contracts that got them nothing. They gave Oprah something like 50 million for her show and there was no spike in new subscriptions. The same with people like Martha Stewart and Jamie Foxx. I think they have admitted those were mistakes (many of them made by XM in an effort to keep up with Sirius when they got Howard Stern) and now they are suffering with them. When those contracts run out (or are bought out) they won't be renewed which will free up money.

Also they have bloated infrastructure right now. They were two separate companies that merged so there are a lot of things that are duplicated and don't need to be. As they pair that stuff down it will help them streamline and get better.

I think they better just hope and pray that Stern doesn't leave in 2 years when his contract is up. He single handedly brought about 6 million or more subscribers into the system and I think many of those might leave if he does.

They have always been carrying a shit load of debt. The merger brought them more debt.

Your math is off by a 0. $14 x 19,000,000 is $266,000,000 per month and about $3.2 Billion in revenue per year. But as a previous poster pointed out those numbers are inflated due to cancelled accounts. Also a lot of those accounts are free trials from car companies etc.

They do have a huge amount of paid monthly subscribers however. I think they are #2 behind Comcast in number of paid monthly subscribers. The whole thing was started from scratch and they racked up gigantic amounts of debt to set up the infrastructure (equipment/talent). Those debt interest payments are starting to come due and they were going to miss a payment without an infusion of cash. Thats what the bankruptcy talk was all about. Now that the new angel company has stepped in they are set for a couple of years.

I think its a great buy and if they can withstand the next couple of turbulent years the company will be gigantic. I know I cant live without my Sirius in the car and every person that I have talked to that has subscribed say they'll never go back. I dont think I have listened to a regular radio station for over a year, other than when Adam Corolla was on in the mornings. Now that hes doing podcasts I never turn it over to FM.
