There is a case in Saudi Arabia right now where a woman accepted a ride from a guy he drove her to his house where he and 4 of his friends gang raped her. She got pregnant from the rape and went to the hospital where she confessed that she got pregnant because of the rape. She was sentenced to 1 year in jail and 100 lashes. They will wait until she gives birth to give her the 100 lashes. She is getting this sentence because she accepted a ride from a stranger and by getting raped committed adultery - even though she is not married.

There was another case last year where a teen girl was gang raped and sentenced to 1 year in jail and 200 lashings. She was eventually freed due to international public outcry.

In that part of the world your average dog is treated better than most women. It is pretty sad.

Slightly off topic: I was watching a news commentary among some "experts" in the Middle East and the topic of "moderating Islam" came up. One of the commentators said that what Islam needed was a 'reform' movement like the Protestant Reformation that changed Christianity. A couple of centuries after those reforms, religious wars, near theocratic states, and widescale religious intolerance in Europe subsided. Another commentator rebutted that the 'extreme' and 'traditionalist' Wahabi version of Sunni Islam IS the product of Reform from the 1700s of Saudi Arabian Islam. That is the "official" Islam of Saudi Arabia now. So, according to him, an "Islamic Reformation" would not really "moderate" Islam at all.

What I think those 2 commentators missed is that Protestant Reformation was pretty severe too. It brought about the Puritans and other Christian denominations that were heavy on personal sacrifice, discipline, and other 'strict' and 'hard' readings of Christianity. Protestant Reformation "moderated" Christianity and decreased the numbers of Religious wars and intolerance not because of its reforms but because the resulting Religious wars showed that secularism and separating the political realm from the religious realm leads to prosperity and progress. Indeed, the conflicts brought about by the Reformation brought about the need for SOME separation of Church and State in some European countries. Notice the steep decline in religious wars from 1500/1600 to the 1700s and 1800s? Of course, by the time Europe reached the late 1700s and 1800s, it had found another reason for countries to try and crush each other--Nationalism and empire.

how is the book publishing process going?

It is going well. I'm in the stages of what I hope to be the final rewrite of the book (although there might be one final quick "polish" to make sure there are no spelling/grammar problems) then it is basically a wait and see. The publisher will have to decide on a release date adn any promotion they are going to put behind it.

So I am working hard on it and just focusing on making it as good as I possibly can then I will worry about the other stuff once it is done and out of my hands.

Military wise they are not a tough country, but they sell us a ton of oil. Without them we would have gas that was $8-10 a gallon or higher so as long as they agree to supply us with oil, we tend to look the other way. If they had no oil you know this would be one of those countries we would have in the Axis of evil and would be calling for sanctions against.

I had a friend that was temporarily assigned to Saudi Arabia back in the 70's or 80's. Because they were American they had to live on compounds. When they ventured outside the gates it was pretty radical.

They still have public executions there, and were forced to the front of the crowd to observe at least one.

He made good money there, but did not sound like it was worth it.

I agree... I've been reading this book called "Nine Parts of Desire" and in the true following of the Islamic faith, women are not treated like scum in any way.
People twist things for their own benefit, especially religion.
