It's for holding pieces of food together. Skewers are used while grilling or roasting meats, and in other culinary applications. When grilling, wooden skewers must be soaked in water prior to assembling and cooking to avoid burning. Wooden skewers are most often made from bamboo, however other woods may be used.

They come in many different styles:

That looks like semi-hard, or potentially flacid wood. Found in most marital homes.

You guys are jerks. He asks a simple question and all you can come up with are mean responses.

It's a stirrer found primarily in Red states in the U.S. You grip it at the bottom and can stir up your favorite batter for cookies or cake. There are even motorized ones that help speed up the process. It's popular because of it's shape. Some people like to lick the batter when they are done stirring. That can get messy so this is shaped to fit directly into your mouth. You put it in as far as you can and eat the tasty batter.

Hope that helps. Best of luck in your cooking.

Here's one where the lady is eating her food straight from the skewer. You can strap this one to your face, so you don't miss a bite!

Looks to me like a cake decorator. You fill it with Icing and pull down the shaft and make do all sorts of cool designs on you cake or pie.
