Does anyone else turn down heat to 62?

Just a serious question... in these times do you try and conserve money?

Hell... I didn't get paid except for porn in three months... the economy REALLY is suckin ass.

My bread and butter was/is construction of new buildings (i use "is" loosely). How about you? Weathering the storm ok?

I keep the heat a little lower than normal but not for money reasons. I just like it a little colder than many people do. For me around 65-66 is perfect.

I own a small construction company. I was down over 30% last year. I feel your pain. This shit is going nowhere but down. Every single contract Ive gotten this year are on permits issued last year. I dont think I have even bid on a permit that has been issued this year. The ironic part is I got the contract on an unemployment office expansion! They are doubling the size....

I keep my heat on 68.

I keep my main furnace at 64. If its real cold out I will use the fireplace in the room I am in for additional heat.

Like kane said, I keep mine a bit lower than most people I know, not to save money, but because it feels comfortable to me. My wife likes it warmer, but she is, um, frugal, so she doesn't mind the lower temp.

BUT a lower temp doesn't always mean that one is saving money. A lot of variables come into play - namely, size of living space and size / age / and functionality of furnace. It might even be cheaper to keep it warmer than you have it now (especially if your furnace is overkill for the size of your living space).

A furnace kicking in and shutting off every five - ten minutes probably uses more energy than the same furnace running 15 - 20 minutes straight so it does pay to experiment some.

Mine is kept on 60. Our house is kinda fucked, though. The downstairs is cold as shit and the upstairs is like a furnace. I literally have to keep some windows open overnight to balance it out. My room alone has like 5 vents in it. I have no idea who designed it, but they must have lived close to the equator or something.

I keep around 62 when I go to bed. I dont like warm when I sleep.also my wifes has an electric blanket and lots of robes. We have hot air heat which is the worse, so I rather warm up other ways.

I turned my heater right off and have a space heater in the room I am working in. I take the space heater around when I change rooms.

Downstairs is really code, office is really warm, and at night my bedroom is toasty.

74 is comfy for our home, what's really got me worried is heating the swimming pool in 2 months....blah, big house, electric and gas runs about 700.00 each per month in the summer, 2 air units.

Now I will be thinking of small ways to save and have it all add up. Time to cut coupons ..hehe!

Don't forget to do something inexpensive for yourself and family, like hitting the gym.

It's healthy and reduces stress :-)

PS, if my heat was set lower than 72...I would be one angry bitch!

Right before I go to bed I pretty much turn the heat off.

Not really for savings, I just hate if it's warm when I'm trying to sleep but I guess it does save money.

The gas bill has come down at least around here. Last year I think I was paying almost $400/month just for heat in the winter. What a rip off.

                                              Nope.

I set the heat at 72-74 for the winter.. all depending if crazy below zero temps or not. In the summer, I like it around 68 with central air. Maybe a hair cooler depending on what I am doing. I never turn it down at night.

I am in the process of insulating my basement (bi-level, only cement covered by paneling on half wall) and adding drywall versus the paneling. Also adding more insulation rolls to the attic. There is some up there, but not enough, and there are patches where it's missing.

We can't top off the attic until we finish the electrical and cans for the living room (recess lighting) upstairs. While it will not help much this winter. It should be nice moving forward for the future.

I don't think we even have the heat turned on really. I live in Northern California; It doesn't snow here but it sure does get cold. It's 11:40pm right now and it's 43 degrees. It will drop down to zero tonight. I'm sitting here working - working my ass off - and I have the window open a crack because it's a bit warm in here.

I have a brand new house and it retains heat pretty well. My home office here is always "unusually warm" but that makes it nice in the winter. In the morning I get up at 7am and I turn on the natural gas fireplace for about an hour until I leave at 8am. The fireplace is in the center of the house on the first floor and gets the house nice and warm, and it stays warm all winter.

I have an AC unit in the most awkward place and it takes hours for it to actually cool the place down, so I almost never use it - I have a couple ceiling fans and some standing fans to keep cool. Thankfully I live in San Diego inland where it almost never gets that cold. Expensive as fuck to live here but at least I'm not paying it in AC/heating!

It's pretty chilly in Melbourne, Australia tonight and I've just remembered our central heating is on the blink. Makes a funny noise just as the fan starts pushing through air and then switches off and restarts the cycle 30 seconds later. It's only blowing out cold air so I guess the gas isn't igniting.

My office is sufficiently warmed by 6 computers but for the rest of the house I've turned on the oven in the kitchen. It's 4:30am so the current trend of the temp is DOWN

I drop it to 60 when I leave the house, and set it to 68 when I'm home.
