:mad Oil Tanker Splits - the world's worst environmental disaster

The crippled oil tanker Prestige split in two today off Spain's northwest Atlantic coast, threatening one of the world's worst environmental disasters. The vessel is carrying 70,000 tons of fuel oil, and environmentalists have said the spill could be twice as big as 1989's Exxon Valdez spill off Alaska.

Dr White said the investigation into the ship's breaking up would be sure to look at whether it would have been avoided if the move to compulsory double-hulled tankers from single-hulled had gone ahead sooner
Double hulled tankers should be manadatory and should be subsidized.

Fuck. I was wondering when it was gonna go. I had a feeling that for all their efforts that the weather was just too bad and was gonna rip that ship apart.

These sorts of things always pull at my heart strings because the wildlife is always so devistated. There is very little that can be done, the damage is always too great.

Funny thing here....... A tanker splits open in the ocean and it's a disaster..... But when Iraq popped open all of Kuwait's oil wells it send 10 times what any oil tanker can hold into the sea - not to mention what it did on land - and no one seemed to notice.

Forget the environment and make more cash.

This is what I'm wondering about as well. A modern ship suddenly splitting in two?

the worst of all is that this disaster possibly could have been prevented if the stupid goverment of Spain did allow our Dutch salvage company to bring the ship to a harbour or bay with more calm water.

Mandatory? Sure.......Subsidized? FUCK NO

The last thing we need is to give more fucking charity to the oil companies than Dick and Dubya already do.
When a company makes $10 million dollars a DAY in profits I think they can buy their own fucking boats

A lot of the giant tankers are at risk of splitting. If you do some research you will see that they have found that beyond a certain size the risk of those tankers splitting is too great to risk building. A lot of the jumbo tankers get stressfractures the same way airplanes due from the stress of the ocean and the size of the hull.

The relieving part in such disasters is that in the end nature will survive far longer than mankind will.
It's really time for people to wake up and see nature as what it is: It's a loan to mankind and not some thing that needs to get exploited for profit.

This is a terrible disaster. However I am glad it was not a US owned ship or the world would be screaming it's bull shit that the US blah blah blah........

In this thread alone I saw two morons mention the US and it had nothing to do with us. Too funny.
