I used notepad and pico for many years, thinking I was "hardcore" .. what an idiot I was.

phpEd right now for me. NIGHT and DAY between it and notepad, etc. I couldn't believe how much more efficient it made me.

I write a lot of stuff in php.

Honestly, I prefer notepad primarily. Yeah, I'm oldschoool too.

"Homesite" is really nice for checking for syntax errors afterwards, but I don't know if it is available any more.

Adobe bought out Macromedia a while ago.

Adobe came out with this monstrosity called "Dreamweaver" which is supposed to be the do-all proggy. But it is kind of like the old joke about the GUI program for C++. Quite pointless if you actually know what you are doing.

Best regards,

Archer

If you're not coding in an IDE, you're not coding efficiently.

Smart newbs use Notepad++...

Hobbiest use Komodo Edit:
http://activestate.com/komodo_edit/features/

Pros use Komodo IDE:
http://activestate.com/komodo/features/

All three are based off Scintilla editor component. Komodo is built upon the mozilla framework and is cross-os compatible. Hands down the IDE is better than anything mentioned in this thread.

Free is good

Aptana studio is a full suite, lets you do all your web coding in one spot...not that I can use a tenth of it yet, and it also happens to be free for the base package.

CS3 for most my PHP and notepad to open and edit quickly.

Aptana studio for my ajax stuff but when done back to notepad for quick edits.

Notepad because its easier to right-click sendto notepad.
