While the latter should be the goal, he should definitely be saying the former each day.
One day at a time is really the only way to get through the beginning. Thinking about the rest of your life without your little friends can be overwhelming and make you want to light up.

Good luck with that.
I quit a few times with chantix but had to stop because of the side effects (depression) and unfortunately always went back to smoking after I stopped taking the chantix.
When it was all said and done I just had to quit cold turkey to stay off of them for good.
However, I do know of several people who used chantix and have been off of smokes for a year or longer. So again, good luck with that. :thumbsup
