    Roger Federer Wins Wimbeldon 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14

Roger Federer beat Andy Roddick in one of the most extraordinary finals ever seen at Wimbledon or any other grand slam on Sunday, holding off a brave challenge from the American to win 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14.

The final set alone of an unforgettable Center Court duel lasted 95 minutes before a Roddick, who took 107 Federer winners on the chin, mishit a weary forehand out of court to give the Swiss great his sixth Wimbledon title and the record of 15 grand slam titles he so cherished.

Roddick said before that he hoped to stall Federer on 14 (Grand Slam Titles) and he will look back at blowing a 6-2 lead in the second set tiebreak when Federer was on the ropes. His failed backhand volley on his fourth set point will haunt him for a while.

Fittingly, Pete Sampras, the only other man to have previously won 14 slams, sat in the Royal Box alongside five-time winners Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver, as a match of unrelenting drama stretched into a fifth hour.
Congratulations to the best tennis player in history, and kudos as well to Andy Roddick for playing perhaps his best match ever.

            That was a fantastic match.
Roger Federer is truly the best tennis player of all times. Just imagine how much of physical and mental strength do you need to have to win a high drama match like this one.

Roddick was damn close. Didn't have his serve broken until the very end. What a way to go.. ugh.

Amazing match. Federer is incredible. Wow.

When I was a kid I played football, basketball and baseball (as well as wrestling, boxing, track, cross-country, and even volleyball). I thought tennis looked kind of gay.

However, tennis is now the main sport I play (I take lessons, belong to a tennis club, and play league tennis and open tournaments). It's a lot harder than it looks, and takes more athleticism than you might imagine. Plus it's challenging mentally as well as physically.

Roddick hit a 143 mph serve today, and both men were consistently hitting balls in the 130's - that takes power to hit a ball that hard, and skill to get the ball in the service box consistently.

While I still prefer to watch football and basketball most, tennis is right up there among my favorite sports to watch. Oh yeah, and I like watching the women play tennis too!

I'm sure it's more fun to watch tennis if you are (or have been) a player.

Roddick fell victim to the court shadows, he doesn't muff those returns if he could see the ball like normal. I watched it from 9-9 in the last set and even though this match was historical, it was still typical men's tennis and boring. Watching 136mph aces is boring and some matches the only points were the server scoring and that is boring!

He did well and it was one of the most exciting showdowns I've seen.
                          And LOL at Pete Sampras.

Pete Sampras was very gracious to show up and wish Federer well for eclipsing his record of most Grand Slam wins.

I saw Pete Sampras play numerous times during his long and storied career, including some incredible matches versus Andre Agassi.

This past February, I had the opportunity to see Pete play an exhibition match against Tommy Haas, and I'm pleased to report that much of his game is still intact.

It was nice to see him relaxed and comfortable in his retirement, after dominating Men's Tennis for so long. Marriage an fatherhood seem to be doing him good.

I had it DVR'd and in checking my Twitter account, I saw Federer's name at the top of the trends and pretty much knew what happened. But then I was a dumbass and went to Alexa to check ranking of something and top hot URL gave away the result of the match in the headline. D'oh! Still, it didn't say the score in the headline just "Federer outlasts Roddick" so I watched it anyways and glad I did. Most of the guys in my tennis club aren't very fond of Roddick - perhaps this match and his great one against Andy Murray will change some opinions. dude played the matches of his life in both of those. Even if Nadal was in the tournament, there's a good chance he wouldn't have made it past either Andy Murray or Federer anyways the way they were playing, so I think Federer rightfully earned this one.

And tennis is no gayer than soccer/football or golf. Upper level tennis is a great mix of power, precision, and chess-like strategy (the precision and strategy is why Federer wins all the time whereas Sampras was a pure power player)...yea this match wasn't as strategic as Federer/Nadal last year which is why despite the length of this I don't think anyone thinks this match was a bigger one than last year's final, but still it was pretty exciting to watch and wasn't a dull one. Roddick holding serve 11 potentially match-deciding games in a row was amazing ...I mean it'd be tough to do that vs. most people and he had to do it against arguably the greatest tennis player of all time still in his prime - after having played a full 5 sets more or less. I'd love to be as fit as either of them!

Federer is an amazing champion.... you just help but root for him.

Im glad he's back at Number 1. Let's hope Nadal doesnt knock him off again.

Federer just doesn't know when he's beat! Roddick was so close to going 2 sets up before Fed made it 1 set each, and changed the game.

Next year they should enter those Williams trannies into the mens competition, before they ruin womens tennis altogether...

I would have liked to see Roddick win. He hadn't come remotely close to beating Federer in the past and I thought he had been playing his best tennis at Wimbeldon in general. He played a great match, but hats off to Roger, what an unbelievable accomplishment!

it was exhausting to watch, and clearly Roger was breaking down his opponent one point at a time.
Roddick looked very tired, Federer even in the 5th set looked like he just started the game.
Federer won by having the best physical conditioning, although he is a tennis machine.
It wasnt the most entertaining game to watch, most points was won on strong serves and/or baseline volleys..

He did fall victim to the sun and shadow on the court for sure but not to take any credit away from the greatest player of all time. I'm sure Federer will win even more events in the years to come.

Ok guys, some of you are going to hate me for this.
I have the utmost respect for Mr. Federer, but I have one question. How could he be the greatest player of all time if he cannot beat 2 of the tour's players on a consistent basis (Murray [2-6] and Nadal [7-13])? If he cannot beat these players of his own time, then how can he be the best player of all time?

Nevertheless, I still congratulate him for his 15th Grand Slam win, and he fully deserves it. I'm just waiting for Rafa to come back and be smart about the tournaments he chooses to play (in order to give his body time to recover).

Wait for Rafa, because if he's HEALTHY, then he'll be the next greatest player......

That's like saying how could Greg Maddux be considered amongst the greatest pitchers of all-time when Tony Gwynn could wipe the fucking floor with him on a regular basis (lifetime .429 with NO strikeouts in over 100 ABs)? But Tony didn't have that kind of success vs. everyone - I'm sure some pitchers had his number. Same with Murray and Nadal - if they were better than Federer, one of them would have taken #1 from him much sooner than last year. Murray is still improving and may eclipse both of them just yet, but still...it's about overall and consistent dominance, and there's a couple facts that set Federer apart from just about everyone except maybe Rod Laver (who didn't have as long of a career as he could have):

-Federer won his first 12 grand slam finals outside of the French Open, by far a record. That should say SOMETHING...Nadal may have owned him on clay, but Federer has been owning just about everyone on the other surfaces - most importantly in the tournaments that count the most in the sport, in the matches that count the most (finals, semifinals). Murray having a winning record against him is great - but it needs to translate to big tournament success first.

                                                                        - Along those same lines, his grand slam record since 2004? 143-9...143 and fuckin NINE. If you take out French Open, he'd be 111-4! The only reason his overall match record for his career is only around 80% win is because it includes the first 4-5 years of his career when he wasn't peaking. By the end of his career he'll probably end up around 90% win with the way he's going. Nadal in the same span is 87-13, and take out the French Open and he'd be 56-12...certainly good and worth of a world #1 ranking, but look - his French Open record is 31-1 - which %wise is only slightly more dominant than Federer is in the other 3 slams.
