No fucking wonder kids are idiots.

Found this article about cutting the home work of the students because they are overworked.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29278227/

According to published reports, the school board gave final approval Wednesday to an updated homework policy that seeks to lighten the load on overworked kids.

The new Broward policy calls on teachers, especially in middle and high school, to assign academically challenging work while also being considerate about not assigning too much homework.

Much of the decline of contemporary education can be traced to relaxed standards. That factor alone explains a lot of the achievement difference between some immigrant groups' kids and other kids in the school system. Some immigrant cultures' home countries focus on strict standards. For example, the rote system. Poo poohed in the west but it builds up discipline and consistency.

Fucking ridiculous.

I remember when I was in college (4 year, not junior college where I started and then transferred) we had to take 18 fucking credit hours, and the profs. told us that the college encouraged more homework to "keep us busy and out of trouble".

I remember a time when teaching was described as a 'noble profession'. People got involved in teaching because they genuinely wanted to help educate others.

It seems these days (many) people get into teaching because of the inflated salaries, benefits, pension plans...and the glut of holidays and time off they get throughout the year.

Thankfully my wife and I are nearing the end of dealing with the education system for our two daughters (one has graduated...the other has only two years left). Soon we'll be able to stop shaking our heads and rolling our eyes at the idiocy and surrealism of the system and say a few prayers for future generations of students.

I fully agree with what you say. Both of my parents were teachers, my father is still going strong in academia, and I would always hear stories about students and so on from them. Then it was a challenge to TEACH the kids. Now it's a challenge to make them pass the exam so the you keep your job... it's absolute BULLSHIT.

i love running into my old highschool teachers now. just as i was getting out of school we had a couple younger teachers coming in, who in th egrand scheme of things aren't much older than i am. maybe 5-6 years. I occasionally run into my old bio teacher in the bar when i go back home, and the stories he tells are hilarious. at one point he actually told me "I thought it was bad when I came in and had to teach you guys, you should see the shit I have to deal with now..." Last I talked to him he totally gave up on highschool and teaches like 2nd grade now. His reasoning was that he just can't handle the fuckups that are in highschool now. lol...

Yup has nothing to do with teacher unions keeping sub par teachers employed, and most likely behind the movement of less homework (that means less work for teachers), overcrowded classrooms and the department of education.
