Apple wants to make jailbreaking ipod/iphone worthy of jail time

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has petitioned the Library of Congress to officially protect phone owners who bypass software restrictions on their phones?aka "jailbreaking." Apple has just filed an objection, arguing that doing so would infringe on their copyright.

If Apple gets its way, it would have the right to claim statutory damages of up to $2,500 "per act of circumvention." People who jailbreak phones, might even be subject to criminal penalties of as long as five years, if they circumvented copyright for a financial gain.

Pretty stupid to penalize people that have already shelled out money for your products and probably will again in the future. that said, Apple has a right to try top protect their interest. Everyone else does in the tech industry.

It's funny how people see Microsoft as the big evil corporation and Apple as this hippie type co-op but in fact, Apple has always been very evil from a corporate standpoint. They stole the mouse interface out from under Xerox and have always fiercely opposed any sharing of their technology or products.

I always tell my friends who are Apple fanboys that if Apple had it's way, the internet would be 10 years behind what it is now. The fact that the PC was open architecture is what as allowed the internet to blow up so fast.
