Adsense - how can I get clicks yet earn $0.00?

I set up adsense on one of my sites a couple of hours ago. So far the adsense stats are showing 1713 impressions, 18 clicks, $0.00 earnings.

I have it set to NOT display public service announcements if there are no suitable ads, instead just showing a blank space.

How can people be clicking on ads yet I'm not being paid for them? Am I missing something?

Yep. I did notice that on a couple of pages the ads showed in a different language at first (eg "Annonces Google" instead of "Ads by Google"), then on a reload they showed in English. WTF is google up to?

I used an existing adsense account, from 2006 or 2005. Do new sites need to be approved? Didn't see anything in the adsense setup wizard about approval.

Its only new adsense accounts that require approval.

never heard of such a thing. check for this problem on a popular webmaster mainstream forum or contact adsense directly.

Does it make any difference that I'm using link units? Could the click count be clicks on the first link unit link, with no clicks on the full page set of ads?

                    FOLLOWUP:

I had the "allowed sites" feature activated and hadn't added this site to the list. It's been a while since I added a new site so I forgot all about that. The impressions and clicks so far have been counted as an "unauthorised site."

mmm my take is that you haven't done a complete keyword/niche research and the keywords you might be optimizing for are paying a misery .... cause I am making a lil more than $0.00.... per click ;)

If you have done ur research then..... weird shit mon... weird shit...

Sounds like you figured it out.

But when the stats roll over for the day it's not unusual to have a couple clicks for $0.00.

My stats over a short period went from 32 clicks $0.18 to 27 clicks $0.00 (BACKWARDS) to 35 clicks $0.57. Dodgy.
