Rain fucks up Cable Modems
Why in the hell does a rain storm fuck up cable modems so bad? I first noticed it living in NC, but its been the same story in all the other places in the U.S. i've lived. With comcast, adelphia & Road Runner.
Anyone else notice a shitty connection (if not a dropped connection) when it rains? Ping google.com with no rain = 100ms Ping google.com with rain = 220ms

Rain kills my cable connection until it drys out.
Fortunately it rarely rains in the land of milk and honey; or is that Tequila and Burritos. |

Well honestly it wouldn't really bother me....but i can't figure out what causes it...i mean, how could the rain fuck up a cable line?

Dam... Ive noticed that too... I think.
I know nothing about wires and cable stuff... but it's been raining really hard here for the past week... and my cable connection has been REALLY shitty. I never knew the rain could have anything to do with it. Wow.

All it takes is for some moisture to get into the cable, the Db loss increases and you are slowed or trashed util it drys out. Old Coax, cracked coax, unweatherized connectors.

I wonder if its the connectors going into the house, in which case it might make sense to put the connectors on the inside...like in a garage i guess.

not a cable connection but...when I had a wireless DSL connection (and oh how I miss it, I'd sell my kid for that goddamn wireless connection right about now) it used to go out on me when it rained. Maybe the raindrops were getting in between me and the signal?

We had problems with our cable provider not because of the weather, all sorted now, hope yours is sorted too!

Cable connects run thru repeaters mounted on poles and they aren't very wethertight, let alone if the cable guy remembers to button the weather hood back down so they tend to have increased resistance when wet.
And thats why cable s*cks in large cities. Repeaters run $10-12k each and the more people in an area on the line, the more repeaters needed to keep up the speed. At 40 a pop per sunscription, they can't afford the required repeaters. Ask Equinox about the night he was down to 3200 baud on cable (major University district) and my dialup was running 49,333. ![]() |

I've had a cable modem for 3 years and ADSL about 2 years. ADSL seems more stable. Cable has faster maximum speed but adsl seems to be faster on average and has no problems in the rain.

I hear ya gemini...i bet big city cable blows cock.
I'm not in a large city though & hardly anyone is on my network, in fact i can select any of 250+ ip's at any time...and i've never picked one someone else is using.... It runs fast as hell downloads around 300-400k, & downloads html at t-1 speed....but when it rains, forgetaboutit |

Just checked mine.. we've had a fair amount of rain today...
Normally I test at speeds between 1.8 and 2.3 megabits. Tonight it's 1.2 to 1.4 megabits. |

I get to pick up all sorts of needless tidbits pr0. The old man still has friends in all the trades from the years he was a contractor. Now and then one stops by and they talk about all of that junk.
![]() Have to admit I was curious about that particular subject. We stick with dsl and even with the old as heck lines in this area, it goes 3 times faster than a neighbors cable. And we don't even have the business connection speed. lol |

Crappy connections that get wet (as discussed) or maybe more traffic on your local network when it is rainy and shitty out...?

99% of the time my connection is OK. the other 1% occurs when it's raining and not raining, so I don't think that rain affects my connection.

Hmm didn't notice is, but maybe the reason is, that when it rains, more ppl using the cable to browse the internet, and that slow down your connection a lil?
