Mike, I've only gone out once for cobia in Georgia and was not successful. Does it have skin let's say like a catfish but it's an ocean fish?

Its not even remotely kin to a cat fish its a pelagic feeding primarily near the surface. The skin is more like that of a shArk but not nearly as rough. some people mistake them for sharks when they see them but a look at the tail fin quickly shows the difference.

Its the best eating fish I catch bar none we fish for them primarily ib the gulf from Indian pass west to destin

The Columbia is at most a 5 minute drive for me right now. It passes just outside of town for me. I'm definitely looking at getting in on it this spring. I got a friend who works with the fisheries department through school in the area. I'm sure she can fill me in on the good spots :)

This Spring the Manta Rays will be migrating and the cobia will be right with them!

The Rays will be flying out of the water. So you can sight fish them fairly easy. Find the rays and you found cobia also.

A manta ray with a 20 foot wing span really sticks out above as well as below the water.

It's amazing to cruise along next to them and just watch them. Have a spinning rod handy with a jig, or even some squid or better yet a half of crab. That cobia will swim right out from under the ray and grab your bait, boom!, the fight is on.

Cobia love crabs, they will do anything for them. They also love structures in the open water as well as following these manta rays for food.

One month from now this will be going on right here. Only happens once a year like this.

I can take 3 people. But let me say first that the best day to do this is on days that have some good swells. It's easier to spot them when the ocean is not flat.

It's a fun ride but you have to hang on!

Here is a cobia cruising under a ray:

is your idea to fish or fuck?

A few points I need to make...when I go offshore, I go offshore to fish, if you want to get drunk and puke into the ocean keep your ass on the beach, I'm serious about it. you dont bring alcohol on my boat, period.

Nor do you bring bananas or anything with a photo of a banana or the smell of a banana or the word banana, you do and it goes overboard...quickly.

If you want to go out and catch serious fish...I got it sewn up. federal snapper season doesnt open till June 1st in the gulf but cobia run strong inshore from about april on, as do Kings and spanish mackeral. Dolphin start making an appearance in april as well with wahoo not far behind. Big grouper and amberjack move onto the ledge starting in May...grouper can be had there year round though.

blackfin tuna and an occasional yellowfin will start showing up in blue water in may as well

Ya know people dont get it but how many times have I taken guys out and all they want to do is get drunk and act stupid on the ocean. Every serious angler here knows what I am talking about too. I have found by telling them up front what I just did I weed out the fucking amateurs and end up with guys who like to catch fish as much as I do. That's why the no alcohol rule and yes that includes beer. Theres enough stupid things you can do to kill yourself in the gulf on a 100 degree day on the water without the assistance of beer to dehydrate you, impair your already poor judgement and endanger everyone else on the boat. A nice cold beer is for when we get back and talk about the amazing day we just had offshore.

And anyone who doesn't know about bananas....well you don't have your captains license.

wow now mike, dont take that comment wrong, when i go fishing, i go to fish. not get fucked up.

but you cant deny that a hot chick holding an 80lb cobia doesnt make a great picture. :1orglaugh

Xrated J 02-12-2009 04:25 PM

meant 40lb :1orglaugh

BV 02-12-2009 07:35 PM

Looks like Mike is about as serious as fishing as I am.

But I always bring beer. It's not technically fishing without beer. Mostly for the ride in. Nothing beats slugging down a cold one after reeling in big ones all day!

My best numbers are 60 miles out so that can be up to a 2 hour ride depending on the seas.

I've got literally thousands of old loran numbers that belonged to an old commercial fisherman but they are mostly 100 - 120 miles out. That's too far.

tranza 02-12-2009 07:39 PM

I loved to fish wild trouts, but I haven't done it in a while.

:(

we got a sense of humor.LOL

and the fish or fuck comment was just to let those who aint serious know how serious we really are.

We routinely go out 70 or more miles so ya the ride in can be long but my experience is if it isnt there it isnt a temptation...now if Im going with my regular guys...no big deal but if I have a 6 foot wahoo or an 80 lb cobia on and yer drunk ass knocks him off the line trying to gaff him...you better be prepared to swim LOL

mikesouth 02-12-2009 08:43 PM

i dont know if Im surprised nobody has asked about the bananas or not

mikesouth 02-12-2009 08:58 PM

LOL its a very long running tradition that bananas on a boat are bad luck, and oddly enough the ONE time I made an exception, we lost 2 bilge pumps and capsized 35 miles out...I got one mayday out with our position....thats when I said no more nbananas EVER and no more boats with anything less than a full transom

fuck self bailing cockpits....

First day of coast guard school for your captains license even...but nobody agrees on WHY they are bad luck but any captain will agree that they are.

mikesouth 02-13-2009 02:36 AM

there are a lot of superstitions about the bananas,

but i bet you haven't heard this story:

The vice president of Fruit Of The Lomb underwear went on a trip with a charter with a captain out of Miami,

after that trip when he got back to work he made the factory remove the banana from their logo. All because of what he learned how superstitious fisherman were towards bananas.

so now Fruit of the Lomb doesent have a banana in their logo.

That captain made him remove his drawers before going out fishing! lol

That's total bullshit though. i take bananas all the time, especially banana and peanut butter samiches :thumbsup and still limit out

mikesouth 02-13-2009 09:50 AM

I hadnt heard that story...classic though

but I absolutely will never ever again allow aven a drawing of a banana on my boat.
