If he's being destructive it means he needs more exercise.. If you can't take him out for a run, I highly suggest finding someone with a treadmill and running him on that for 30-40 minutes a day MINIMUM. THe destruction stops when their excess energy is drained I run both my dogs on the treadmill and they LOVE it, not to mention they haven't destroyed anything but rawhyde bones in 2 years now that I've gotten them into the routine.

Any kind of working class or big energetic dog MUST have their energy drained, or they aren't obedient nor will they even listen to you. you can draw your own opinion on kennels, but my 60lb german shepherd/husky loved her kennel. I run the hell out of her in the dog park, she's well exercised, still loves that kennel. I have been breaking her of it for a while when she's home alone, and usually doesn't fuck anything up.

kennel training does do wonders. it's like a den, they feel safe inside of one

I agree with crate training for sure, it gives the dog a secure place it feels nobody else can go. But exercise is definitely key. It will cure most anxiety, boredom, destruction, howling problems. If you still have problems after the crate and the exercise are taken care of, then it's time for some behaviour work.
