I crack my neck all the time. a few times i have cracked it so hard i had a momentary loss vision or got stars. do you think it is possible to go the whole way and dislocate or break my neck or sever spinal cords?

If ya sit at the computer all day it's likely your neck will get stiff. The best thing to do is stretch your neck a few times a day for at least a few minutes. Just google neck stretching if ya don't know the right way. Keep that up for month or two and the stiffness/popping should die down. If it doesn't go see a doc. :P

Well I use to just ignore it like most people do that work in front of their PC all day. I could pop my neck like 3 or 4 times just bending it one way. But after stretching my neck 2 or 3 times a day for a few minutes it nearly stopped. It's pretty hard for me to pop my neck now because it's not stiff anymore...

I do pop some of my joints every now and then...

When it comes to your neck and popping it your just causing a bad cycle. A lot of my life is dealing with back and neck pain so I do know where your coming from though.
Looked through a few articles and found one that explains it pretty good.

Good link except the bottom where it says chiropractors can help. Some people trust in them so whatever floats your boat but I'd never trust one. If you click the first link I posted you can see they can be harmful to you. In some states they don't even need a license, they can just open up shop.

                              excellent article! thx!

i can pop nearly every joint in my body including my wrists, elbows, shoulders, ribs, collarbone, hips, knees, ankles, foot and of course the common places - toes, fingers and spine. it's pretty crazy. they often pop just from simply stretching.

Not endorsing the chiropractor stuff etc. Just was looking for something that did explain spinal health in pretty plain English and that one fit for most part. It is not like I could of posted a link to a 39 page PDF file written by doctors in medical format and really expect anyone to actually read it. (not real file, just example)

I crack my own neck all the time, especially when I'm around my chiropractor friend. It drives him nuts. While I'm pretty sure it would be hard to actually snap your neck accidentally I'm sure several forms of damage are possible.

always seemed to me one of those habits people pick up... and as they do it more... they need it more.

im pretty fucking glad i dont need to crack my neck... scares me.

are you just bending your head or are you applying pressure with your hands/arms...i will be the first and proly only one to say yes you can break your neck either way...tho you'd proly need to have osteoporosis or some degenerative disease to do it without using arms/hands

i've had chronic neck pain for about 7 years now due an injury that i sustained while playing high school football, basically i compressed all the muscles in my neck causing them to tighten and it caused the natural curve of my spine in my neck to shift. I went through 2 years of physical therapy and 1 year of chiropractic therapy neither of which fully fixed the issues i was having with my neck.

since them i'm constantly manipulating my neck by myself, anyway 2 months ago i was at my desk smoking a cigarette i cracked my neck and the next thing i know i'm pulling myself off of my office floor. i'm no 100% sure this is due to me cracking my neck but it would make sense as what happend fits most of the symptoms for a stroke.

i got up and my face felt numb, i had no idea where i was or how long i was on the floor for.

i never went to a doctor to get checked out but i'm highly reconsidering going to see one to see whats up with my neck and body

after all the years of therapy and doctor visits, mri's, catscans, xrays etc... i just don't feel like going through all that shit again (time and money) to find out theres nothing they can do for my neck

I get a lot of neck and back tension and frequently crack it. Yes, it is possible to have a stroke from this. A friend of one of my relatives had a stroke from cracking her neck which led to paralysis from mid-stomach down. She was in her early 20s when it happened. The odds of something like this happening are very very slim though.

If you are moving your head so much that you see stars when you crack your neck you obviously are doing too much and could seriously hurt yourself though I doubt you will break your neck...

Simply humans are built to MOVE. Sitting in front of a computer all day puts a huge amount of strain on your bodies. One thing I have recently done is setup a workstation in my office that allows me to work at my computer STANDING UP. Wow, what a difference. My back and neck are so much more relaxed now. I still do have my sit down desk, but I use a big exercise ball for my chair now. That helps a lot too.

You do not want to dissect your neck arteries, trust me I've got stents in both my carotids (not from neck cracking) it's dangerous. If you have blurry vision seek medical attention and have a contrast CT scan looking at your arteries, if you have dissections they can put you on blood thinners to minimize possiblity of clots and if you are lucky it will resolve on its own though they might suggest stenting which is a pretty easy procedure.
