wordpress question re: permalinks

Is it necessary to use a category tag or word in permalinks?

I know this can work:
blog.com/category/apples/
blog.com/category/oranges/

can this?
blog.com/apples/
blog.com/oranges/

I just hadn't tried it yet, so I wondered it the "category base" word was needed.

And dont go crazy with # of words in the postname. Up to 6 would be OK.

I want the category name, but not the category base. I want it to work with the category /feed/.

blog.com/category/apples/feed/ works
blog.com/apples/feed/ doesn't, that I am aware of.

i'm looking to get rid of /category/ altogether if possible.
