If it's a cool mill in Maui, what do you think the same house would go for in a less popular area..?? I know it's a general question but I'm just trying to get a feel of the cost of living there more than anything, I guess..

3 Bedrooms 3.5 Bathrooms
Interior Living Area: 2,109 sf
Total Living Area: 3,848 sf
Land Area: 7,700 sf

It's hard to say.... properties vary so much here because of proximity to the ocean.... if you buy in Kahului, which is pretty much the hub here... that's where you go when you gotta go to the store.... it's cheaper... cuz it sucks.

but even a one bedroom condo on the 9th floor ON the beach down here can cost upwards of $750k...... so, it really depends on how close you are to the water, and whether you're in Kihei (the working mans town where I live now), or in Wailea... luxury resort world, where we're going....

Lahaina is reasonable, but Ka'anapali up the road is outrageous again because from Ka'anapail up through Kapalua is all luxury again.....

Living here is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination..... it CAN be.... but I wouldn't want to live that way. This will be the most rent I've ever paid anywhere.... topping even Silicon Valley with my one bedroom condo for $1537 a month..... this is more than double that, but well worth it. :glugglug

Have fun

Amputate Your Head 11-15-2002 11:29 PM

this 3 bedroom condo I'm in right now just sold for $155k....

extremely close to the beach, but it's pretty much not-so-nice if you know what I mean..... we took it because we had to.... no one else would rent to us sight-unseen from California over the phone.... but our lease is up, and we are fucking GONE baby... :)

not from this place, the back is totally enclosed with coconut trees.... which really isn;t such a bad thing either... :winkwink:
but if I walk out the front door, go down to the corner, and across the street, I'll be standing in the Pacific.

JasonB 11-15-2002 11:33 PM

Nice pad.
Wailea is sweet. I just got married at the Grand Wailea 2 weeks ago. We had a real estate agent showing us around looking at some places.

I'd move there right now if it wasn't for the 30 day mandatory animal quarrantine.

Grand Wailea is pretty awesome..... only 5 minutes down the road from me....

Amputate Your Head 11-15-2002 11:42 PM

you might wanna make some calls dude.... I heard rumor that they're dropping the quarantine to only 1 week and it's in-house now....

Amputate Your Head 11-15-2002 11:44 PM

I don't know how in the fuck I'm gonna move all this shit by myself in just 2 weeks....

daddynastee 11-15-2002 11:45 PM

Awesome digs...congrats. Good for the soul!:thumbsup

I lived in Hawaii for twenty years, before moving to Seattle. Maui rocks, and Waimea is niiiiiice -- though up country Kula is where I'd settle if we move back -- I still visit Maui three times a year -- gotta do it, once you know what it's like, and how it works your head, there's no option.

not to mention all the new shit you'll have to buy. Especially with a girlfriend

quiet 11-15-2002 11:48 PM

hey amp, i'm curious - did you look at any other places for rent in the area? similar style? i'd probably want to lease before purchasing.

i don't know what the fuck i want to do :glugglug

yeah, we looked at quite a few.... there's alot of really nice places here.... this is a hard time of year to try and rent though..... off season.... we got lucky and knew the right people... :Graucho

but yeah..... there's no shortage of sweet ass places, for virtually any budget except dead ass broke.... :glugglug

Amputate Your Head 11-15-2002 11:56 PM

you're not gonna wanna look at anything under $2100 a month at the bottom of the scale though..... anything less than that is gonna be a dive.

Amputate Your Head 11-15-2002 11:57 PM

and that's why I don't mind leasing right now either.... if we still like it a year from now, we'll buy it.... but I can't force myself to get locked into a place unless I KNOW I wanna stay there for a long damn time..... so leasing kicks ass for that purpose.... :thumbsup

nocostporn 11-15-2002 11:59 PM

how much does a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk cost?

either of those is $5 bucks...

gas is $2 per gallon.

Dinner out averages $80 bucks at an average place... fancy will run you $200.

MakeMeGrrrrowl 11-16-2002 12:01 AM

Congratulations Amp!!! I'm sure it will be WELL worth it :)

exactly. i've been to Hawaii just once, for 2 weeks. it was awesome, but not a good way to judge actually living there.

i wouldn't really have a rent target. something nice. probably no more than 5K/month. i'd still keep my place here. and i'm also in the process of buying a ski-in/ski-out condo in BC. hmm.

TeraBabes 11-16-2002 12:04 AM

Dude... that place looks GREAT - congrats! What's the ocean like walking distance from you? Is that a good area for surfing? How is the beach near there?

How cool will it be when quiet is living down the street from you in 6 months? 5 years from now, GFY people will take over the entire neighborhood :thumbsup

oh no problem then.... you could live large here on a $3500+ per month lease..... extremely large.... oceanview, the works.

The first place we looked at.... the one I got so excited about before, was only $2100 a month... INCREDIBLE ocean view.... but we just got to it too late..... however, we didn't get to see the inside, so it could've needed some work...

but for anything $2500 on up, it should be immaculate. If it's in Wailea, it will be immaculate. There are no shitty houses or neighborhoods in Wailea. Same up on the west side too.... anything from Ka'anapali on up to Kapalua is gonna be pretty sweet... there are a few condo complexes in there, in Napili, but overall, it;s pretty sweet.

No reason you can't have them all. Pick the 3-5 places in the world you like the most and buy property in all the locations. Then live wherever you want, whenever you want, for as long as you want. When you get bored, go to another place.

And have a girlfriend in each place, of course.

If and when you decide to sell, you will probably have made a nice return on your investment that you can roll into the next place somewhere else.

Most importantly, keep us updated on your travels!

ocean is just on the corner and across the street..... the surf sucks here right now..... flat as a lake. But there's some waves over on the other side of the island at Ho'okipa..... probly 30 minutes drive time.... beach here is stellar... s-t-e-l-l-a-r baby! Here's a pic of the beach sunset across the street...

Congrats bro. I can't wait till we go to Maui next. I'm hoping we can around the first of the year.

Don't tell Mrs. RedShoe, but I'm planning on maybe buying into a business there. Probably something in real estate. :)

We won't be far away, (upcountry) so I of course am inviting myself and the Mrs. over for a drink or two... or twelve.
