Both these characters have something in the neighborhood of over 40 years of backstory in comic history. You can't really expect people who grew up reading them to ignore all that and just go on a couple of recent movies.

because that would lead into a need for a team to beat him (avengers)

No, at the end of the movies, they were hinting at The Avengers.. which is in pre-production already. In other words, they'd be on the same side.... at least for a while. And should Hulk go nuts, Iron Man would have the rest of the team backing him up so we'd still never know the answer to the question.
