I'm sure you must be joking with this question, but here is the succinct answer :
Because of the U.S.'s prominent role in the Cold War, the President of the United States was often dubbed the "leader of the Free World", particularly within the United States itself. The phrase implies that the U.S. president, as leader of the principal democratic superpower, was by extension the leader of all the worlds’ democratic nations. Although it had a Cold War origin, it is still used to describe the U.S. Presidency today.[1]
that's what they have called the U.S. for many years.. live under a fucking rock?
Nope I just don't think the US is the Free World... Do You?????
LMAO pretty fucking pretentious don't you think as you are ONLY the United States of America and there's a whole lot of other countries on this planet.
You ain't the World and with America's Economic situation shouldn't we call the Us president Leader of a Broke World
Please no disrespect to any of my american I just thinks it's very silly to call the US president leader of the free world.
Even the America bashers have to acknowledge that whenever something bad happens... everyone looks to the United States for answers. We may not always do what everyone wants... but hey, when 6 billion people all want something different, pretty difficult to please everyone. :-)

LOL. You may think that... hell I may even think that, but the fact remains, the world still looks to us. What else would you call that? We aren't "just" the United States... maybe in 10 years it will be different, but that's the way it's been for quite some time.

I have never bashed america, only bashed their past leader... I just can't picture america as leader of the free world after the last 8 years.
Hey JBOY er man........FUCK OFF! How much of the money you make comes from the US
I ain't bashing America I am asking a question, why are they calling him leader of the free world when our world it's pretty much fucked up with 2 wars going on.
Also I'ver never heard a Canadian talk about ANY US president as leader of the free world, even in our media.
So take a chill pill and ask yourself this question, is your current President leading a free world right now.
If you get on your high horses then I must of struck a lill never Eh!!!
I think the US has been synonymous with the leaders of the free world for some time now. Not sure how the reputation started but that's what I think of when I hear the expression.

You mean look down on you for being an aggressor and intruder? No one looks to the fags for answers. Everyone is just asking what the fuck will those morons fuck up next
Simple - I don't see people banging on Canada's door to get in. In fact, I watched a show about Homeland Security where this one lady was able to get into Canada with no problem, but she really wanted to come to the US. Besides, it's too cold in Canada.
Watch this video of your fellow Canuckian, Monsieur Neil Young (although he lives down the street from me now), performing "Rocking In The Free World", then maybe you'll get the message:
Nope I just don't think the US is the Free World... Do You?????

Well, when some other country steps up to take the role their PM, queen or whatever can be the leader of the free world. Until then, I guess we are stuck with the responsibility.

uh, i've always had WAY more hassles getting back into Canada from the US. Huge bs, and it is a constant pain in the ass. and i'm FROM Canada. but never had a single problem going to the US from Canada. anyway, love both countries in their different ways.
i am a born and breed Canadian. i love this country, and as much as i will continue to travel the world for the rest of my life, i will ALWAYS call Canada home. having said that, it seems (imo) that well, duh, the US is the ONLY country (at least at this point), with the tech and nukes to destroy the entire world, on the western hemisphere. so of course the phrase makes some sense.

try standing near the door for awhile you would be suprised

i watched this show called "born in east l.a." and this guy named cheech got into the usa no problem , well there was a few problems getting in but everyone had a good laugh in the end.
Its simple. He is the most powerful man in the world. This who bash America may not like that very much, but that is recognised by governments the world over. Because of that, he leads the free world. He doesnt lead the world as the countries that are not free tend to detest America and all it stands for. Hence him being the leader of the free world.
That doesnt mean America rules the world, it means he is the most powerful man in the free world.
Its pretty obvious why he is the leader of the free world I thought..and don't Russia, UK and France have enough nukes to end the world also?..
The UK does have nukes, but I dont think any of us would want to fire them against the USA. I would guess they have alot more than we do, given that their armed forces is much much bigger. Were better off being friend with the USA

Then you aren't paying attention.
Let's take Vancouver for example. White men are one of the visible minorities. Look up the statistics some day.
That doesn't happen because no one wants in.

It was used from the time when the world was pretty much divided into areas under US influence, areas under Soviet influence, and the third world of poor countries.

He's only the president of the United States of America.
What is the free world??? sounds to me like a cool inexpensive place to live
For the same reason they called GW Bush, Clinton and every other president the same thing. It's all about American propaganda machine and making Americans think they are the best country of the entire democratic society within the western world.

errr Do some research before you say something so foolish. Have you seen the amount of immigrants in Canada? and before you say thats just because they did not get into the states, you're wrong. I know many many immigrants in this country, my parents included who chose Canada over the US.
