Dad's grow-op busted after baby dials 9-1-1

Jan 21, 2009 05:58 AM
THE CANADIAN PRESS

WHITE ROCK?A B.C. man probably wishes he had given his 11-month-old son a set of keys to play with instead of a phone, after the infant accidentally dialled 9-1-1 and brought police to dad's marijuana grow operation.

Mounties say a 9-1-1 call came in from a White Rock, B.C. residence Friday morning but whoever was on the other end of the line hung up.

Officers arrived at the residence and after numerous knocks on the door went unanswered, they entered the home.

"The gentleman was quite surprised," said White Rock RCMP Const. Janelle Canning.

She said the 29-year-old male, startled by the sudden sight of police, insisted he hadn't made the call.

When it was suggested a child might have dialled, the father objected and said his son was far too young.

That's when police spotted the baby boy, phone in hand.

"We saw him playing with the cordless phone and just pressing all the buttons, so evidently he had called 9-1-1," Canning said.

With that mystery solved, officers began inspecting the residence and soon discovered a 500-plant marijuana grow operation.

The father was arrested and will appear in court in early April on charges of production of a controlled substance and mischief.

The boy was removed from the home by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, though he was later released into his mother's custody.

The mother does not live in the residence and Canning says she had no idea what was going on at the home.

Wonder what gave them the right to inspect the residence after seeing the kid with the phone. Would think probably cause went out the door with that observation.

So why did they proceed to search the place? Seems like they should have left after they realized the baby dialed by mistake, unless they smelled the marijuana odor or something else giving them probable cause.

I am going to guess that 500 plants may require a couple sticks of incense to cover up the smell.

I don't know.

A lot of new laws about hang-up-911 calls have been put in place.

If it's anything life the US the cops are instructed to treat it as if a victim had
the phone taken away from them when they dialed 911.
So from that angle they need to check the place to see if there is a victim
some where inside.

Sucks in a way, but if you're the one tied up after dialing 911 and the crook
answers the door pretending to be you then it all looks different from that angle.

Pretty sure his lawyer will still argue illegal search and seizure. Even if it gets thrown out they are going to be watching that guy like a hawk for the rest of his days.

I think at some point every kid dials 911 either by accident or out of curiousity. My son got banned from a skating rink on a school trip over that. Dialed 911 from the payphone when he was 7 thinking it wouldn't work because he didnt put money in.

Your anti-establishment mentality is causing your blinders to slide over your eyes completely.

So, suppose you are away and Cherry was being attacked and dialed 9-1-1. The attacker is able to subdue her, and when the cops come, she is quiet and no one answers the door. The cops leave.

Three hours later you return home to discover her bound and gagged, almost dead. She remembers hearing the cops at the door and utters this to you just before dying.

Are you going to be glad or sad that the cops just went away after no one answered the door?

Yep, that's why the cops changed all this, especially in california.

If you want the cops and dial 911 and talk to them they may decide not to even come.
But if you dial 911 and hang up, a patrol car will at least drive by your place and
observe.

While I understand the reasoning, however, it is NOT the policy of every 911 center to even send out cops for these calls. Let alone it is NOT police policy in every city to KICK IN DOORS.

LOL @ anyone who thinks thats how it is across 50 states, because its not.

My opinions of cops has nothing to do with the fact that it is not standard practice to kick in doors of every home that dials 911... that is simply NOT TRUE.

I did a couple quick google searches and can easily fin 911 operators claiming half the time on hangups they wont even send a cop out let alone kick in the door.

But hey, ill leave police policy to you experts lol

my comment above about lawyers drooling... was quick and wasnt directed at any of you.

I have lived in LA California and that's how it works there.

One thing I have noticed about people in my life is that they talk a lot of great
legal stuff up until the cops slap chains on them and then they get a grip on
reality that the law gets twisted to fit what the cops want.
And 9 times out of 10, it sticks like glue.

Everybody knows the things you are talking about, it's just that some of us
have seen the system work and it's not even close to perfect.

My son dialed 911 from his grandmothers house a while ago. They called back and asked what was going on, she explained that her grandson had called the number by mistake, and they were fine with that.

That was in Toronto though, and the cops here will do everything they can not to solve a crime or get involved in detective work.
