The Giant Circuit City Blowout Sale: Don?t Bother!

I found myself up unusually early this past Saturday morning, so I decided to check out what all the frush was about with the giant ?Circuit City going out of business? sale. Hell, they might have a few items I wouldn?t have otherwise bought if the price were right. I went over to the closest store in Burbank, found the place to be mobbed, it was impossible to park, most of the good stuff was already gone, and the lines at the register stretched to the back of the store.

I said, ?Fuck it? and left.

So, I decided to check another store out in LA and there was a line out the door so fucking long, you would have thought Led Zeppelin had reunited! The crowd reminded me of the cast of ?Idiocrasy?.

Fuck that shit, I just drove on.

Here is the kicker, here are the big ?savings?:
1. 10% on most everything.
2. 20% on CDs and DVDs (all the good ones were gone)
3. 30% on the already overprices cables.
Meaning, if you spent 100$ on a new DVD player ? you?d save a whopping 10 bucks. Like 2 bucks on a CD? Unless you are having a whopping HDMI shortage at your house, this sale is basically worthless!

Do you really need to spend 4 hours to save 10 bucks? Is your time worth $2.50$ an hour?

Mine isn?t.

Viva BestBuy!

I read somewhere that it's going to take them up for 4 more months to clear out the stores.

It'll probably be a while before stuff get's really marked down. And by then, people will be fighting over junk.

my brother-in-law picked up a very nice laptop for $450. He said it was previously opened but still under warranty.

People are programmed to perceive a great deal even when it's not and try to benefit of someone else's bad luck, apparently this Jedi mind trick works really well..

We were at Best Buy yesterday. It was across the street from CC. Their parking lot was packed and it appeared as the overflow was parking at the BB lot.

I don't know the details of this laptop of course but $450 for an opened box is not a good deal especially if you have to wait for hours and there will be no store for you to return it to in about a month..

I read that they expect to be done by the end of March. Different sources. :-)

The "blow out sale" is for marketing purposes. The purpose of a liquidation is to get as much money as possible to pay off the creditors.

Yeah, it's actually a great new way to market retail. Just say "my store is closing" -- then do a mass sale of your inventory and just stay open.

They could have had a 10% off sale any day of the yeah and nobody would have paid attention.

People are fucking idiots.

I'm convinced some people already do that... the same group of guys "closing" and "opening" the same furniture store. Makes you wonder how many people's credit they kill putting businesses in their names.

It's a $1400 laptop and still covered by the manufacturer's warranty and 3rd party extended warranty. It was opened but never used apparently. Only reason he'd need to go to the store is to return it, which he doesn't plan to do.

Frys is good when you know exactly what you want or for basic stuff like keyboards, mice, etc. Forget about getting knowledgeable service in that place.

I see that quite often nowadays.

A big fucking sign out front that reads "LIQUIDATION SALE!!! - you go inside and find they're only 'liquidating' their current merch...yet staying in business.

Deceptive marketing. In days gone by - a liquidation sale meant they were going belly-up shortly.

They do that with furniture stores where I live and there was this one Asian guy that did it with a stupid "Everything's A Dollar" type stores. He'd mark the shit down 10% then 20% and bring in what had to be five figures per day on worthless junk. I saw people pushing buggies filled to the brim out of those stores.

According to staff at CC and Best buy - they dont work on commission. Not sure whats wrong with some companies in direct customer sales but surely the incentive to learn your products and sell more would be to........have the sales staff work at least partially on commission, so they know what the fuck they're talking about and can close a sale.

I can think of one chain of lighting stores in my area that has gone through about 3 names... each time their "closing down sale, all stock MUST GO" tv ads run for literally months, then not long afterwards they're back with a new business name. The ads for each reincarnation are virtually identical - same font, same style, same announcer - just a different trading name!

I don't know if it's a dodgy marketing gimmick or their business model is to periodically wind up the company in order to release outstanding debts.

My brother is an assistant manager at Best Buy and it's true that they don't make commission. Kind of weird if you ask me...

I have the opposite reaction... They have the least knowledgable sales man and clerks I've ever encountered, but I could care less. Good prices, and insane selection. I go in there knowing what i want... The only use I have for a clerk at the store i when I need something from the memory, processor or photo cage.

Much like the 'price point' of WalMart on the end caps. Perceived cheaper than other places.

A jedi mind trick that has been working for decades.

I went and picked up little big planet for the ps3 and a ps3/wii docking station. The line I stood in was to checkout, and that was for 10min. Worth it to save $20

People are fucking idiots.
I remember a place in Manhattan on 14th street that was going out of business for 8 years.
