I'm going today, but I heard its like Disney made a movie about a racist. It doesn't really "go there", if you know what I mean. I'll find out for myself.

I am not talking about Indie Flicks here, I get those too on "Movies On Demand". |

Anyway, the theater doesn't get as big a percentage as you might think. |

Personally, I download movies fairly regularly. The catch: I have an unlimited subscription to the movie theater. If I wanted to, I could see every single movie that is released there 5 times over without paying a cent more than I already do. The funny part: if there was a paid download service with guaranteed high quality and no annoying drm, I'd use that. The "they can go fuck themselves" part: on every blank dvd I buy for backup purposes, I have to pay an extra "tax" which is used to compensate record and movie companies for people copying their work. |

When a movie comes out in the theater you pay to see it for two reasons. 1. You get to watch it on the big screen and 2. You get the convenience of seeing it now, not in 4,6,8 or however many months it takes to get to HBO or TNT or wherever on cable. When you do watch it on cable later you are trading a service for a price. If you watch it on HBO or some other premium channel you are paying for access to that movie (and their other content) so you get to watch it. If you watch it on one of the non premium channels you are exchanging your time to watch it. There is an implied agreement that you get to see the movie for free in exchange for putting up with some commercial breaks. By downloading it you can be taking money from the studio and all parties involved. Many movies end up having their future earnings based on how well they preform at the box office. If you have a movie that does 150 million at the box office it will likely sell more DVDs, rent more DVDs, sell more pay per views and command a higher fee from both premium and basic cable channels when it is later sold to those markets than if your movie made 50 million. So by downloading it you are, in effect, causing it to preform worse at the box office than it otherwise may have and that could cause them a loss of revenue down the stream. |
The downloading argument aside, I say go see Grand Torino. Clint is amazing and the movie is stunning.
It is not about a bitter old man teaching other people how to live or being a hero. It is about a man so consumed by guilt that he craves redemption and one day finds it in a place he would have never imagined. |

So lets assume for a minute that you were brought up on charges and we are standing in front of a judge or a jury. You really think they are going to buy this theory of yours[/QUOTE] I can't presume to speak for anyone but I do believe that I have a strong argument but even if they didn't, I would ask that they in turn prove to me monetary damages. |

I bet your a hoot on a date. "hey watch me put a hair in my food and we can get it for free". I despise people like you. You are the reason that everything goes up in price and why I have to take 5 million twisties off of my kids toys when I buy them. Scumbags like you need to go on your special island and steal off of each other all you want. You deserve each other. So let's take this to a base level since that's all you seem to understand. Movie comes out in the theatre. Not a single person goes to see it or buys a dvd because they all downloaded it. None of them wanted to pay for the right to see it on a big screen and didn't want to pay for the dvd. Just how many movies would be made? You are a pathetic thief plan and simple. |
I saw Gran Torino on saturday and liked it a lot. The ending was a bit of a surprise to me, though I'm sure those out there that will say it was predictable. There was one part that I thought was hokey... one of the lines he used when he confronted the three black dudes hassling his neighbor, but I still laughed when he said it.
Good movie, imo. Worth seeing. |
Kind of a cross between dirty Harry and Archie Bunker...:winkwink:

Good movie. Eastwood was great but the supporting actors were not very strong.
As far as bitter old racist men go, he nailed it. |

You think Wal-Mart, any store for that matter, would just let you walk out with a movie and not pay for it because you believe you only have to pay for something once? Quote:

When a movie gets released, someone has already hit on this a bit, its success is based on the amount of money it makes first and its popularity second. So if a good movie comes out and most decide they would rather illegally download it at home, there are MANY negative affects. 1. The main effect is if a movie doesn't make enough revenue. Even though it might be a masterpiece, it will become hard to find a DVD distributor. This is specifically important in the Independent Movie arena. So not only would they be getting screwed at the box office, now their income is continued to be offset by inability to distribute. You think cable channels pay top dollar to air box office flops? 2. It's lack of success can lead to the writer, director, producers, etc. never getting work again or push their career back for making a movie that didn't bring in enough revenue. Same with the actors. 3. Your rationale only pans out at far as the Hollywood Studios and ends there. What about all those people who depend on royalities or percentages of profits, rentals, DVD purchases, etc. If you are illegally downloading movies you have COMPLETELY screwed these people out of their hard work. This is especially true in the case of independent movies where normal salaries are often traded for a percentage in future earnings. What you are doing is stealing, plain and simple. Your "I pay a cable bill" is not a justification for a free for all on anything you want. Paying a cable bill entitles you to a SERVICE ONLY not a RIGHT to every movie ever made. |
This thread actually convinced me to go out and see it... Far better that I expected. :thumbsup
Bama? Bama? Anyone? Anyone? |
I can't stand that everyone seems to enjoy this film. I wasn't going to write a review about it, but now I almost have to just to give it a thorough bashing like it deserves.

Until you hop off your horse and realize that, every single time you fast forward through the commercials of any and every television show you've ever taped, you're robbing the studios of revenue. The sponsors pay huge sums of money to deliver their message to you and you skip right past it... There isn't one among you that don't do it - and please, just don't even try to make me believe you don't - so if you think my hands are dirty - your hands are just as dirty and you're just as guilty... and I just can't tolerate being preached to by a hypocrite. |
great mov !

Gran Turismo > Gran Torino

I'll have to see Gran Torino. Thanks.

it was an awesome movie. Clint Eastwood was Clint of the dirty harry days. Great drama and the girl/guy playing the neighbors were great. Excellent storyline. Clint's character is like Archie Bunker to the extreme. Thought the girl was pretty cute too..
Movie of the Year!! |
