Anybody know Studio 3ds Max?

i'm not trying to be a 3D graphics wiz, I just want to use bought models and render them to use as design elements. so i'm experimenting, never used the program before. i have a free model of a nice antique chair, I open the 3ds scene file (chair.max) - then when I go to render i get the message that External files are missing - these are jpegs - they did come with the file - so I set the Path to External Files to the folder these 3 jpegs are in and nothing - the model renders in flat ugly colors instead of the nice wood and fabric. anybody have any tips?

Cant help You on this specific issue. But i can speak of my own experience with 3d modeling (and thats not a lot). The best results i ever got.. and I tried so many programs, was to use poser pro to set up the pose. And then import that into cinema 4d for rendering. Cinema 4d has some great render plug ins and live material paint.

Other programs were buggy and liable to crash. Getting content to work was exactly how you described, a pain in the ass!

3ds Max and Maya are one of the most advanced 3d programs out there. I know because I have worked with both of them a lot. Anyways make sure your materials for the chair are applied and the link path to the jpeg is correct. Also make sure you are rendering with the materials 'on'

You must setup the necessary config to your render, for example, if you're using default render, get the correct config... Go to Render options and do some tests with different values to get better results, copy?

If you are using V-Ray, plays a little with it! ;)

I use 3d studio max all the time.

It is possible that the person who put the model online ethier added the wrong maps or did not set the chair with the maps assigned. Open material editor and pick the first 3 maps and see if you see anything under difuse map with a message saying "missing map" if so click the bitmap where it says missing and go to the correct path. If that does not work then just add the maps in material editor and assign them to the chair.
