my cologroup server was down today for 3 hours, because they had "maintrance" in LA, the most fucked up thing is that I was not notified about the maintrance.

very real concern. probably should re-install the OSs and monitor for unusual ports, at the least.

did this guy know kernel internals? if so, it might be tough to catch everything. the thing i'd be concerned about would be insertion of backdoors into customer site's PHP/CGI..

Anyone who has root access to a server can easily install a trojaned daemon. You probably should re-compile all daemons listening on a port (telnet/ftp/ssh/httpd/etc), as well as review any/all CGI/PHP scripts.

Jason, Myles should have been fired a long time ago. I remember talking to you months before when we had a problem with him and you said he was on his way out then. He is the biggest asshole I've ever dealt with.

I take it you have one of those unarmed security guards? Anyone that almost gets run over carrying a gun probably could have solved your problem on the spot.

Backup, format, reinstall. That is THE only way to clear backdoors/rootkits off there. A smart "hacker"/kiddy will backdoor up all your services, rootkit your binaries, throw in an LKM, add a few UDP/TCP backdoors and backdoor up some CGI/PHP. And that's probably the beginning.

... I know, that police chase ended in front of our doors so we took him on ... and sacked him 12h later when I found this threat ... he then left for the airport ...and went straight up to portland !!

I'm glad we're going to have Myles in the family. He'll take care all the boneprone family servers.

We spent all yesterday fixing the network and blocking access, so Myles can not get to the servers. There are no continuing security risks.

Also, as far as support goes, we have a whole new team that many people have started to deal with recently. From what I hear, the new tech team has been getting the :thumbsup As far as issues like maintenence, customers will be notified before anything is ever done. I always wanted it that way, but Myles refused to let customers know when he was taking things offline. Just another reason he was fired and another reason why things like that wont happen again.
