Riiiight....no difference between groundbreaking rock music in the mid 60s, and glam-rock or punk.....easy comparisons to make since they all happened in the 60s/70s :1orglaugh

I don't know any of McCartney's solo stuff except the song Live and Let Die because GnR did a good cover of it on Use Your Illusion I.

Oh is it, sorry Matyko from Hungary. But anyone who thinks Oasis isn't in the top 25 bands of all time are clearly deluded, of course the Beatles are way better than Oasis but to say Oasis are not even in the top 25 is just pure stupid.

I have much more respect to other artists from UK: Queen, Nitin Sawhney, Sex Pistols, Morcheeba or Chumbawamba just to mention a few comes into my mind.

I have no problems with Oasis at all, I only think that it makes no sense to argue about they are better than The Beatles or not.

You know, when I was like 18 my constant argue with my father was if The Beatles is the best or Queen. Now I admit that Beatles is the better simply because they invented something completely new and made a HUGE effect/change on GENERATIONS/culture/everything. They are the real Acid Prophets, just watch Yellow Submarine and you'll admit. ;)

All You Need Is Love

"Semolina pilchard dripping from a dead dog's eye"... They got it wrong. The real line is even worse.

I saw the Beatles perform, at the Hollywood Bowl in 1965. Saw the Stones in '74, thought they were past it then. Saw Pink Floyd perform "Dark Side of the Moon" in 1973, first time I ever heard it they were playing it live. I hated it, wondered what that commercial crap was with the saxophone and the Supremes-sounding chicks.

I saw Stan Getz perform at the Playboy Club in L.A. Tiny room, seated 75 people, if that.

I've seen Steely Dan several times. I think they're great. And I have a soft spot for Daryl Hall and John Oates, who I saw at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip in 1975. RCA Records was givin gout unlimited tabs and the opening act sucked so I downed double vodka gimlets as fast as they would bring them. When the headliners came on, I saw two Daryl Halls, two John Oates, two lead guitarists, two sax players and two drummers and the 10 of them put on the best show I ever saw.

I refuse to get tied up in arguments like this. I know what I like, and if anybody thinks record sales -- or YouTube views, or Melody Maker surveys -- are going to make somebody say "I thought the Beatles were cool, but now that you've explained it to me I now see that they suck and Oasis is Just It" (or vice versa)... think again.

A lot of Americans here dont know who Oasis are, im sure this thread HAS changed the mind of a lot of those people. I wish i was in their shoes, being introduced to Oasis for the first time they must be buzzing right now.

I'm sure most know who are they are. For me they were just a flash in the pan pop rock band that had some success in the late ninties. I even bought a couple albums of theirs though soon after sold them with a bunch of other cds I no longer wanted. Its great that they have left such an impression on you. Its great that, to you, they are one of the greatest bands out there. I'm sure you have many memories tied up to their songs but everyones experience and tastes are different and you'll have to accept that sooner or later.

Exactly... They broke out in the mid nineties when this kid was like 10 or 12 so that explains a bit. His fanboy crush seems beyond reasonable though as her appears to hold them at god like status which they clearly are not. Neither are the Beatles, but the proof of their greatness lies in their innovation, continued record sales (Top grossing and total albums sold of any other rock group) and staying power.

They are both good, but this kid is blinded.

No doubt, Ramones were groundbreaking - but look back on the two "careers" and I think most people would agree that the Clash had a bigger impact overall.

Far-L 01-12-2009 10:13 PM

First off, when discussing the Beatles be sure to classify pre-acid and post acid work. I prefer the latter. And who can take responsibility for tuning them in, turning them on, and unleashing the creativity for dropping out amazing tunes like "Across the Universe" and "I am the Walrus" and basically all their most ambitious and stunning compositions?

That's right.

The DEAD!!!

(Jerry loves you all, and he played a sick instramental "Eleanor Rigby" btw)

P.S: If anyone says Bob Dylan then you are only halfway there... he turned them on to weeeeeeeeeed

Blazed 01-14-2009 12:25 AM

Coldplay+Oasis holy shit.

A lot of people probably never knew Noel was such a beast on the guitar top 5 all time guitarist without a fucking doubt.

Wise :2 cents:

As a punk-rock addict kid I hated Beatles. Now I see why: radio played only a few tracks, but played those MILLION times... Their greatest songs are not overplayed.
