Obama wants a college football playoff

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/...all/index.html

Friday was not the first time Obama stated his preference for a playoff system.

"It would add three extra weeks to the season," Obama said in a "60 Minutes" interview just after his election. "You could trim back on the regular season. I don't know any serious fan of college football who has disagreed with me on this. So, I'm going to throw my weight around a little bit. I think it's the right thing to do."

Nice to see our politicians tackling such important topics during these tough times.

However, I do agree that there should be a playoff. Utah looked like they could have beat anyone in the nation when they played in the Sugar Bowl.

Shouldn't this be left up to the college associations and left out of politics?

This is just the beginning. After hearing him yesterday I have no doubt that we are fucked. "Only government" can save us now.

I agree for sure. Like I said, I do think there should be a playoff system but I don't see how this is the government's problem.

Either way, as long as the money is what it is and is distributed like it is, a playoff system is never going to happen.

I didn't understand why there was a congressional hearing for Roger Clemens either, but there was. People love their sports, including Presidents.

No kidding, the fucker needs to spend his timing on things that a president should have his hands in. Fucker is going to meddle in things he has no business being in.

Granted USC, Utah, Florida, Texas ALL have valid arguments for being champs but because of a fucked up system we're robbed of 3 extra games that seriously should have been played. Shit I'd settle for Utah taking a shot at Florida and Texas/USC duking it out but a solid 4 way split is just stupid. I can deal with Co-Champs like 97 Nebraska/MI but a 4 way split seriously pisses me off.

The argument is all the extra weeks is too much of a strain but just 1 more week can settle almost everything. Worst case you'd have 2 teams and just share the title but MOST of the time you'll have 1 team stand out.

Utah spanked bama, Florida didn't really dominate bama.
Texas sneaked by Oklahama. Florida and OK weren't quite as close.

Both USC and Florida lost to pathetic teams. Texas is the only 1 loss team that lost to a truly great team (tech with a last second MIRACLE at home in the game of the year)

Since Texas beat Oklahama I know Texas would match up better with FL. Colt is simply better (accuracy numbers + mobility) Bradford ran up the score on tons of scrubs inflating TD counts. Colt hit the bench quite a few times when the games were settled. OK got to the title game by running up the scores and unsportsmanlike conduct.

All that said I'm NOT a big 12 fan or SEC fan. I'm a sad lil Notre Dame fan that won't enjoy a title till I'm much older if at all. Michigan as my #2 team will SUCK for the next 10 years.

The big 12 simply didn't send their best team to the big 12 title game or the championship game.

STILL why the hell was so much time wasted looking into cheating in an organized sport? it is completely up to MLB/NFL/NCAA to run themselves.

From that article

In an April resolution, the House of Representatives formally, if not forcibly, condemned the BCS as "an illegal restraint of trade that violates the Sherman Anti-Trust Act" and also urged the Justice Department's Antitrust Division to investigate. Since this resolution, though, no serious action has been pursued.

On Thursday, Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, reintroduced the College Football Playoff Act of 2008.

The bill, originally introduced December 10, would "prohibit, as an unfair and deceptive act or practice, the promotion, marketing, and advertising of any post-season NCAA Division I football game as a national championship game unless such game is the culmination of a fair and equitable playoff system."

If passed, this bill would apply to any game that occurs after January 31, 2011. It would be enforceable by the Federal Trade Commission.

Barton said Thursday that those watching the championship game are being "bamboozled."

"This year's BCS failure proves once again that it's time for college football to come up with a fair way to determine its champion," he said in a statement. "It does pit two very worthy teams against each other, but can anyone say unequivocally that the winner will be the best team in the country?"

<insert sarcasm> What would we do without government intervention!

You guys don't think that certain colleges have monopolized this? What do you think happens when a team gets a BCS bowl bid? Its still very corporate, colleges, including academics, have a lot to gain from it being fair.

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you. I'm just saying if they have time to discuss a few particular baseball players, then I'm just assuming they have time to discuss the entire college football bowl system.

My guess is the NCAA will just wise up on their own, and finally come up with a playoff system like everyone and their mother has been asking for.

Personally, the bowl system is one of the reasons I never got into college football.

Same here. I don't understand why college basketball can have an awesome, exciting playoff system, and college football has the stupid, no-champion bowl system.

Because the system, itself, is political. : )

Think of the revenue the BCS creates for specific colleges. Something should be done. I really don't see the big deal. Its corporate. Its antitrust.

Nobody is really arguing for or against that... the argument is whether or not the President should get involved.

Everything is political. Whether a stadium sells Coke or Pepsi products is political.

I didn't read it so much like he was going to make a Presidential mandate or anything, just that he was making his opinion known and would continue to do so.

I don't see why not. Using a "voting" system to give opportunity to academic revenue? A voting system highly influenced by those that benefit most?

And lets not make a bigger deal out of this than it is. He said "influence." That's all.

He didn't get involved, he made a recommendation from being a long time college football fan. Being a man, a human, having a life and being American... I kinda expect this and hope to see more of it.

You guys act like he just started watching football, sat down with his advisers and came up with a plan to change college football..
