im an utterly surprised by some of the responses in this thread. specially by people posting ballads as "hard rock" songs? wtf

seriously like 50% of the replies just show people have no idea what music is.

Tool - Schism

Korn - freak on a leash

System of a down - Chop suey!

Nicky 01-08-2009 02:20 AM

I will now officially never take your opinion on music seriously. Ever.

PornMD 01-08-2009 02:54 AM

Cannibal Corpse - Skull Full of Maggots :thumbsup
I'd find something good by Slayer too but too lazy.

tranza 01-08-2009 07:00 AM

Black dog - Led Zepellin

Rebel D 01-08-2009 08:27 AM

Where the Hell is Black Sabbaths Paranoid??

Phaseman 01-08-2009 08:33 AM

gornyhuy 01-08-2009 09:39 AM

More proof that there is no accounting for taste.

AngelFX 01-08-2009 09:59 AM

Since getting more than 2 (at most) people to ever agree on "best", I decided to with a title that was a bit easier to quantify. :upsidedow

I'll take "people who like stupid songs who think other peoples stupid songs are stupid" for $500, Alex.

Sweet Child O Mine

GNR

Hands down best guitar solo ever. NO ONE can emulate that solo I have seen many try to pull it off but NO ONE has Slash's tone.

Drake 01-08-2009 03:16 PM

Too many to name but as far as amazing straight up hard rock songs, these come to mind (maybe I'm just conventional):

Zepplin - black dog (or rock n roll)
Sabbath - Paranoid
Hendrix - Purple Haze
GnR - Welcome to the jungle
AC/DC - Thunderstruck

I'd have a very different list for ballads and best metal songs (yes Sabbath is metal but paranoid is hard fast rock IMO).

danevans 01-08-2009 03:30 PM

Can't name one, but to name a few personal favorites:
Uriah Heep - Easy Livin'
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Billy Idol - White Wedding, Rebel Yell
Motorhead - Rock N Roll
Metallica - Seek & Destroy, Battery, lots more..
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark

Agreed . . . or their version of Kentucky Woman. I used to go to this local pizza joint when I was a teen, and there was a jukebox that you could get 3 songs for a quarter. I always played:

1. Kentucky Woman - Deep Purple
2. Easy Living - Uriah Heep
3. Man, this was like 1969 or 1970, I am surprised I remember two of the three.

It'll come to me. . . . time passes .. . . . I am leaning towards All Along the Watchtower. I am also thinking I may have rotated the third song and that is why all these Hendrix songs are popping into my head.

Well a combination of Hendrix and Dylan is a tough contestant for sure.

Deep Purple - too many great ones that are never mentioned, besides the whole Machinehead or huge ones like Fireball for example "Bloodsucker", that song always gives me shivers - best if live, but they don't play it too often, cause Ian has to be in top form to sing that one.

If I should name one - my favourite would probably be "Layla" - the original version from Derek and The Dominos, the song just always standed out, it has a whole lot of feeling and emotion in it.

Yep, pretty much sums it up. Blackmore RULES!

Props to 'Welcome to the Jungle' as someone here mentioned though. It is a great song.

jakethedog 01-08-2009 08:15 PM

damn i am liking this thread .. have to come back in with

Scorpions.. "No one like you .. " brings back some of my best memories ..

OG LennyT 01-08-2009 08:23 PM

By hard rock I was trying to get at the genre that isn't quite metal but heavier than Bruce Springsteen... recognized by heavy guitar intro, solos, etc...

I agree with Sabbath as Iommi and Butler made some haunting sounds for Ozzy to vocalize to... let's start with their self-titled "Black Sabbath" to start.

Lots of good music in this thread :)

TTiger 01-08-2009 09:00 PM

dream theater - metropolis

Joe BrainCash 01-08-2009 09:04 PM

Here's a couple of mine:

Crazy Train- ozzy (played to death but still)
Welcome To The Jungle- You Could Be Mine- GNR
Motley- Red Hot ( or the whole Shout at The Devil album)
Pantera- Fucking Hostile ( ok, harder than hard rock)
Ac/Dc- For Those About To Rock ( We Salute You)

and what got it all started for me:

Iron Man- Black Sabbath

And so many more...How to choose just one?

aaaaaaaaannnnnnnnd.............we have a winner! you stole that entire list right off of my keyboard!

EonBlue 01-08-2009 10:07 PM

Way too many choices for this question. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and The Who are obvious front-runners but how about some of these:

Limelight - Rush
The Spirit of Radio - Rush

Rusty Cage - Soundgarden
Oushined - Soundgarden
Spoonman - Soundgarden
My Wave - Soundgarden

No One Knows - Queens of the Stoneage

Clean My Wounds - Corrosion of Conformity

Or how about the songs that created the genre:

You Really Got Me
All Day and All of the Night

ExLust 01-08-2009 11:26 PM

Master of Puppets - Metallica is the best for me too.

Lester Burnham 01-09-2009 12:11 AM

Most of the songs in Back in Black by AC/DC.

Honorable mention:

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Iron Man - Black Sabath

Rock you like a Hurricane - Scorpions -

Photograph - Def Leppard

CDSmith 01-09-2009 12:26 AM

Ever made --- those are the key words aren't they. As in, "Of all time". Over the past 40 years or so I don't know how many top rock songs of all time lists I've seen compiled. Many dozen I'd wager. Topping ALL of them were always the following three songs...

Stairway to heaven (also voted song containing greatest guitar rif or solo of all time)
Hey Jude
Bohemian Raphsody

Put in any order you want of course, it really depends on the source. No real distinction was made for a special "HARD rock" list in those lists mind you, it was all lumped together.

CDSmith 01-09-2009 12:56 AM

For hard rock of all time my list might go something like this...

Born to be wild - Steppenwolf
Woman from Tokyo - Deep Purple (I'd have said Smoke on the Water but frankly I like this track better)
Whole lotta love - Led Zep

But it really is highly subjective to personal taste, and everyone's list is going to look different, not to mention that some will want a distinction between "Hard rock" and "heavy metal".

The only way to do it is to compile a list of maybe 500 of the most notable songs in hard rock history and then let several thousand people vote on them, each choosing their top 100. The songs that get the most votes get ranked the best, simple as that. And the one song that gets the most votes is #1.

The question then is, who gets to compile the main list and decide what songs are included?

This guy JaM1337 has compiled a pretty decent list, at least in my opinion. Click here and scroll down just a little ways into the comments, he's put up a top 100 list of his own in sections. I could live with that list, although I'd of course make several personal changes if let at it. :D

Mr. Bungle: The Girls of Porn!!

The Girls of Porn

Okay, all you pus-sucking motherfuckers out there
It's time to win a chance to butt-bang
Your daughter's tight virgin cherry ass to caller #666

The urge is too much to take
All I can think about is playing with myself
It's time to masturbate
I've got my Hustler and I don't need nothin' else

Ginger...Ginger

My hand gets tired and my dick gets sore
But the girls of porn want more
So I flip throught the pages one more time
And I just let the jism fly

Yeah yeah yeah

A quarter for a peep show
A private booth or talking to a naked whore
XXX video
976 and I can whack it on the phone

Nobody's home, I'm alone
The devil in Miss Jones
Nobody's home, I'm alone
Aja & John Holmes

We got gushin' gonads, tingling tushes
Hairy balls and hairy bushes
S & M, whips and chains
Pregnant ladies with menstrual pains
We got hand jobs and nipple tweaks
Finger bangs and slappin' cheeks
We got rape, necro & both ways
And lots of hung studs for all you gays
We got incest & bestiality too
We got Sade & the sweetest taboo
We got girls who'll eat your pee and poo
And guys who'd love to fuck your shoe
There's she-males, lezbos, & shaved beav
And D-cup mamas with so much cleave
Senior citizens who love to watch
And sniff those skid marks from your crotch - yeah!

Ain't got no woman next to me
I just got this magazine
And what's on the TV screen
But that's okay with me

I was trained to fuck you baby...
