I have always BEGGED to be completely knocked out during each and every one of my many surgeries. Personally I'd pay them 10X as much not to hear/see/feel pressure/etc. :(

You're a stronger woman than I'll EVER be!!

Sending good thoughts your way.

Done it 3-4 times. No big deal other than the squishy sounds and the medical smell. Should go just fine.

Will they allow you to watch? :-p

Oh I don't want to watch it. In fact, I am making them put some kind of drape up so I can't see what is going on. :helpme

brassmonkey 01-07-2009 04:52 PM

Tjeezers 01-07-2009 05:16 PM

Nothing to fear
my future wife is working at a hospital as docter and she just said you will have no pain.
I am sure she is not fooling you, or perhaps she is...

RRRED 01-07-2009 05:20 PM

I'd pay top dollar just to be knocked completely out for the day cuz of the killer sleep you get. No need for surgery... You are indeed, crazy lol

Epidural! :P

HomerSimpson 01-07-2009 05:28 PM

I guess the feeling that somebody is messing with your flash and bones and those sounds are what you should really be worried about... there will be no pain...

not to be confused with "knocked up" :2 cents:

CDSmith 01-07-2009 05:29 PM

Every surgery I've had I've been knocked completely out. But something way down there on the foot I think I could handle being awake for as long as they're not amputating it. Fixing it, yeah I think going the route you're going with the mp3 player would be just fine. Needles are nothing, they're mosquito bites and are over in a few seconds each.

Good luck with the surg Hone-girl.

This was in June, now Dec 18th I had the same thing done again but this time in my right hand and again HELL no knock me out, but this time the med's they gave me burned like a bitch going in and I was like hey this shit hurts and before anything else could come out I was gone! LOL

Jack Sparrow 01-08-2009 02:43 AM

Can we do a quick fundraiser to get the full knockdown?!

denny007 01-08-2009 03:31 AM

Will you do local (needles) or epidural (needles into backbone which numb body from belly down) ? I saw a hip replacement done with epidural anesthesia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidural

potter 01-08-2009 03:37 AM

it's your foot. local is more than enough. quite yer bitchin

tranza 01-08-2009 06:53 AM

Good luck on it!

ajrocks 01-08-2009 07:02 AM

It isn't a big deal, I've had a few operations while awake, and major ones. They give you something to relax, generally you are so relaxed you don't notice a thing.

My question is, has anyone else ever had surgery on just a local? Was it horrible?

I was pretty brave when I made the decision and now that I am less than 24 hours away, I am wondering if I made the right decision.

If you can have it done that way I would definitely recommend it. I had a local for wrist surgery many years ago. I requested it. Much better than a general and you get out of recovery much faster. They put a sheet in front of me so I could not see anything and it was a little boring. I remember thinking that I wish I had a portable CD player and headphones to listen to music while the doctor and nurses worked. A local is also safer as well as cheaper than a general.

Bart-ESO 01-08-2009 09:23 AM

Go for a local, it's not that bad.

But for heavens sake, don't even think on epidural, that sucks... Gave me a shitty pain in the back for about 4 years.

Achmed 01-08-2009 09:27 AM

i was awake for my testicle enlarger surgery

KRosh 01-08-2009 09:49 AM

I thought ahead and took my iPod. They let me have it in the OR and I watched videos during the biggest part of it. You are right, it was much better as far as getting out of there quickly and no drug haze. The worst part was all the injections to numb it. Holy cow. Those things were not pleasant. But, once my foot was numb it was not a bad experience at all. I even watched the xrays when they checked to see if the rods were in position.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, stories, comments and well wishes. I am on the road to recovering now and should be back on both feet in 8 weeks.
