The fact that people are opposed to Israel's current tactics because of the many civilian casualties they inflict does not make them Hamas sympathizers.

Just to be clear, Israel's current tactics are a fight for survival.
I don't hear anyone complaining about the losses in Iraq or Afghanistan caused by multi nationals military units from around the world who are there because of terrorism.
Terrorism knows only one thing to be held tight and to be dealt with in a strong hand. It is this that works and it is this that will abolish terrorism from around the world and it is this that Israel is doing to protect it's own citizens.

My brilliant plan would be for Israel to offer the Palestinians a (painful) compromise, and give back a decent portion of the land that has been taken over the past few decades.

Hamas still won't be happy, but having a viable country would likely win enough Palestinian minds for radical influence to fall back a decent bit.

Because, oddly enough, having people live in an overpopulated, impoverished ghetto does not actually dissuade them from joining terrorist organizations.

Personally, I think the international community should speed up such a solution by making it clear to both parties that if they don't reach a compromise in the next 12 months, they'll be cut off from all international trade and aid, and every single one of the leaders on either side will be executed.
