Vonage / Anybody Use It?

I had Vonage back in 2006 and I thought it was pretty good but didn't need it very long. Now I'm finding myself calling Canada more and more and now my cell phone bill is crazy high. Is Vonage the bomb or is there something better?

I use it and have no complaints. The new hardware they ship out is quite nice and has great features like built in caller ID, call history, etc..

Magicjack works pretty well for me, but the only disadvantage is that the unit has to plug into a pc - a regular phone is then plugged into the unit .

Each magicJack costs $39.95 plus shipping and handling. This gives you one year of calling to the USA and Canada, plus voicemail.

You can purchase an additional year's service for $19.95

I've used Vonage for years and never really had a problem. The only time I had problems it was my cable modem taking a dump.

it has its ups and downs. I like how you can call to Europe now for free or really cheap which is nice. unlimited plan for $25 a month is nice because I use my cell phone a lot.

One key feature i really like is voicemail to text which translates any new voicemails into an email so I dont have to listen to peoples voices anymore

however, 1 feature i with they had was call block by specific numbers. i get about 5 or so solicitation calls a week and would like to add those numbers to the reject bunch.

MagicJack is fine if you only want to make calls... and don't mind occasional crap service. My limited experience with it indicates the service sucks. They're also years away from profitability and any chance at providing a long term service. Oh yeah, the jack only gives you an RJ11 which you must plug in an analog phone. If you plan to use such a service while traveling, do you really want to pack your pink Princess phone in your bag?

I have a wedding photog buddy on the Indiana side of Chicago. Vonage is the most cost effective way he found for having local numbers in both Illinois and Indiana, plus an 800 number. He has used it from home, coffee shops, hotel rooms, etc.

I have another buddy who is an airline pilot with a side job doing sales for a technology company. He takes Vonage on the road with him all the time.

Whoops, didn't think of that. A major insurance company I worked at a couple of years ago had lots of Indian programmers on staff. Those guys were constantly using Skype to call home.

use skype, vonage and magicjack... go with vonage for 99% of the stuff and skype for the other. magicjack might fold tomorrow and you'd be out $40 for their service. IMHO

I've had it for a couple of years without the first problem... I was paying almost $160 up to sometimes $200 a month on my landline, dropped it and got Vonage for $30 a month. The ONLY shitty thing is when your internet goes down, your phone goes down.

Vonage is overpriced but if money doesn't matter too much for you they are the biggest name in the market and for the most part can be relied on to have better service levels than the competition. I've been on too many "startups" that eventually go to hell when they get popular and all kinds of hiccups happen.

I used Skype in/out for 1yr. Cell phone like call quality and couldn't get touch tone to work for the life of me. I of course used a USB adapter to plug in a normal cordless phone.

If you want local numbers in a LOT of locations skype is the best option I know of.

i got vonage in 2005 and had numerous dropped calls... I had DSL connection though.

Moved to another location for my office but decided to try and save money and get vonage at home again... early 2006.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THIS STORY... i was separated from my bitch ass wife at that time and she had a different address. Well... I got back together with my bitch ass wife sometime in late 2005 but I guess her forwarding address was still in effect.

She ordered vonage under her name... that would be in 2006... and the box never came. Multiple calls were made explaining why the box likely never made it to our house but the fucking Vonage personel could simply not understand the concept of their box got lost. Never got the box... never could speak to someone with english as first language... uhmmm kinda reminds me of a hosting company I once had.

anyways... ya'll would be very excited to know that in 2008 I kicked my bitch ass wife out the door!!! Nothing really to do with Vonage but wanted to express my joy.

Cheers!

I use Packet8 and have for a number of years now. It allows me to have a phone on my desk in London that is local to my parents in the States so we can communicate for free. Prior to that I felt very much more removed from my family.

I did briefly have Vonage but canceled in the trial period because I decided to stay with Packet8 and let me tell you calling to ask for them to cancel was up there with trying to quit AOL. Nightmare.

Personally, I'll never use a VoIP line for business. I can tell from the slight echo in the background if someone is talking to me over a VoIP. For home use, no problem, but not for office.
