Headphone 4 Plane Rides Question

When I fly longer than an hour, I like to listen to my iPod, or watch my DVD's on the player. However, sometimes the noise of the engine is so fucking loud, I can't hear on my DVD player.

Is there something out there that can boost the volume?

Just curious if anyone else has found something, or has experienced similar before I start running searches to save myself some time.

Thanks in advance.

You seriously hear the engines that much?
I honestly can not even recall hearing them come to think of it. I will admit I never sit by the wings and am typically in front of the plane but still.

Hefty price tag for something I only use on a plane, but may be worth the investment.

I think I remember seeing these on some infomercials late night.

You can get noise cancelling headphones for less than that. Those are just really high quality.

I have a pair of Philips earbud style ones and they work just fine. especially considering they cost all of $20.

I will ALWAYS upgrade my seating before take off to get at the front of coach, and right behind first class... er.... AfterShockMedia BRO seating.

However, depending on the plane, sometimes the noise is crazy. Plus, keep in mind, I have to sometimes use regional connection flights over to Detroit or Minnesota before catching the second leg.

So even the front coach seats it seem like I am listening to the all NWA engine radio station.

True. I don't actually use them on the plane but I see people doing it all the time. Some people unplug the cord and just use the headphones to cut down on the noise so that they can sleep. It's amazing when you turn the switch on how quiet it gets.

Impressive.

I wish I could sleep on the plane. I would probably snore and drool all over myself. So I just remain awake. But on these 3-5 hour flights from here to California, Vegas, Florida, etc... I need to watch something. I get tired of reading the mags, and shit.

I thought about some audio books for this year, and load them into my iPod. But I would still need to pump up the volume a bit to hear clearly. It's not as bad on music, since my mind fills in the blanks with what I can't hear from memory.

But on new material, kinda annoying to be drown out by the all engine channel.

The noise canceling ones do work. In fact, they only really work for airplane engine noises and similar constant tones.

You could also try getting a pair of earbuds that block out sound. Not noise canceling but the ones that fit in your ear really tight and block out sound as opposed to ones that just sort of hang off of your ear.

AudioTechnicha make "QuietPoint" - much less than the Bose, and if the amazon reviews are anything to go on, better.

Full ear coverage, so they block a lot - up to 10dB of cancelling too - the silence literally is loud if you do it in a quite place ;)

I had the same thoughts as you, until my buddy let me borrow his on a plane ride. I was sold instantly... Seriously worth the money in my opinion.

I bought some cheaper phillips over ear cancelling headphones (they are 75% cancelling and were like $80 or so) and they work pretty good on the plane... Been meaning to try out some earbuds though to save on space.

I use these and can barely hear engine noise.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E6G9RI

They're not expensive and sound pretty good (considering the price).
