Disney Timeshare: Who's Done It?

I came back from my trip in early December (ref: http://www.gfy.com/showthread.php?t=...ghlight=Disney) and have been too tired or lazy to type out my experience in regards to that Disney Do's and Don't. However I did look at the timershare, and do the whole meeting, cookies, and shit.

Sounds lovely, and told them I would think on it. I am kinda interested in the new resort over by the contemporary, that will be done this year. It's on the monorail system. However, you can trade your timeshare points for a lot of other places, locations, and so on.

I was wondering if anyone else has a Disney, or some other, type of time share. Or heard experiences on it. Right now you can buy a entry level studio type for like $18,000.00 and it's a week or two a year. Depending on where you stay.

I dunno dude, I've done a few timeshare presentations and looked at the used ones for sale online and stuff, there's no numbers that add up to it being a good deal. In a lot of cases the annual fees are almost as much as what a hotel room would cost you anyway, and besides, people in our business aren't tied into a yearly vacation schedule.

Agreed on those points.

I know when we went, it was around $1800.00 ($380 of it airfare). We stayed in the shitty Pop Century because the main one's I wanted to stay in were sold out... contemporary, port orleans, etc. (obviously it would have cost much more, and we were only there for 4 nights)

We did not do the dining plan, and spent around $500.00 for the two of us on food. Another couple of hundred on trinkets and shit. There were just the two of us.

The current gf goes down to Disney every year for a week min. She is going back in Feb for the parks (4 days), and resorts. Then taking the cruise (3-4 days).

What I liked about the Disney Time Share was there were other places I could use my points OTHER THAN just Disney.

Timeshare usually equals bad idea. Rental houses for a week would be cheaper and then there is house swapping.

Agreed.

However, you have all the added hassles. Parking, getting in and out of the parks when you are tired, nap, go back, etc. Versus being on property, and a walk or short ride away.

Fair enough.

I don't know if you can but there is a company called Timeshare Only that buys/sells timeshares. I wonder if you can get a "used" timeshare for cheaper. Seems you already have your mind made up :P

You can use my Florida residents pass. Disney is the mafia.

Nah. I am still on the fence. The gf loves the idea.

I really like the idea that I do not have to do my time share weeks at ONE place. Like I do not HAVE to do Disney World every year. I can go to hundreds of other places around the world and use my 'points'.

For starters, almost every timeshare company has the points system and location swaps, this is definitely not unique to Disney.

That $18k plus the yearly maintenance fees though will go a long way towards your next many years of vacations, without being tied to any company or any contract.

Timeshares are the adult paysite of real estate

you probably have to pay extra, some "transfer fee" or whatever they call it, and it's not as easy as it sounds, the trading is available for only certain dates and only for certain places, there are some restrictions, etc, at least that's how it works with most timeshares...

+ like someone mentioned earlier, you have to pay yearly taxes, maintenance fees, high interest mortgage, etc... they don't even disclose half the stuff when you buy it, you find out when you get the bill in the mail, then you find out there is some extra $300/year "membership fee", etc... no matter how hard you try the numbers don't really make sense...

i live in sofla - Disney is great, but 1700 times (give or take). I would never, ever use a timeshare. When you go to Disney the point is to have fun not to be annoyed by sales people - which they will, over and over.

Thanks for the additional info. All that shit is something not explained in detail, and all good points of thought for sure.

Let me get this straight- You are wiling to pay eighteen thousand big ones so they can keep you captive for a week of your life in a fucking shitty theme park so you can rack up extra expenses while you are there? Not worth consideration even if they got Snow White to blow you.

What about if Snow White was jerking you off, tossing your salad, and sucking your balls?

Snow White better have a twin sister helping her work me over for eight grand total! I can get a jerking and ball sucking, and even some throat fucking (not too much into salad tossing) any week at my house for like $200, he he.

Put it this way footsies... A timeshare is pretty much the worst thing you can do with your money. It's better off on coke, hookers, or Paul Markham content.

Generally timeshares are not a good idea. Disney is a good company but 18 G's is a lot of cake to be tied to one company. When we go to Disney we go through a guy that owns the timeshare and he gets us a good place on the property to stay and saves us money. It earns him points too. (Having said that) I own a timeshare with Marriott and I am completely happy with it. Be sure to check secondary market to buy a timeshare rather than going through the company as you can get better deals.

I can hook you up with our guy that gets us places and you can ask him how he likes his timeshare there, and he can get you a place to stay for a good price.

I have a friend that has the Disney timeshare. They like it, but only go to disney every couple of years. I guess through it they have gotten some really good deals on cruises as well.

That said, it is expensive and it seems kind of restrictive. I have another friend that has a timeshare through trendwest. With that one they can go to any of the trendwest properties worldwide including ones very near disneyland and disneyworld.

To me that seems like a better deal.

In the end what it boils down to is how much you will use it. If you really use it a lot in the long run you may actually save money, but most of the time you won't. You have to assume when you go even if you use the time share you will buy upgrades and stuff like that so it really isn't a free trip, it is just a little bit cheaper. Essentially what you are paying for is a hotel room and for 18K you can get a lot of nights at different hotel rooms.

Always do your research before asking on GFY. You'll find those timeshares go for pennies on the dollar on the resale market. I picked up one for $1k on the Vegas strip off of ebay. Having stayed at most of the hotels on the strip, I prefer the timeshare over all of them except a few. I pay $455 maintenance fees/yr to stay in a 1 bd condo overlooking the Bellagio fountains. I could probably stay in a dirt cheap hotel room instead but I'm spoiled now. I've exchanged for great places in California and the Caribbean and the exchange fee is about $150-200 depending on the place/upgrade. For actual user reviews/forum check out tug2.net

Think about it this way. If you took the same amount of money you will be paying every month put it in a savings account. Would you be able to stay in a nice place without a bill hanging around your neck or being locked in if something changes(ie the gf is no more). I cant imagine spending a whole week at Disney.

If you buy one, buy one someone else is selling. Even look on Ebay and other places - sometimes people just want out and you only need to take over the yearly fees.
