I'm a big believer in "do whatever the fuck you want as long as it doesn't hassle me" but I often wonder why the government forces me to wear a fucking seat belt for my own good, but doesn't give two shits if I smoke cigarettes.

Alcohol can be used moderately with little to no health risks, but there is no "acceptable" use for cigarettes. It's just bad for you and anyone around you, so it's amazing to me that we keep churning out and selling something that we know is so highly carcinogenic. And yes, I know why we do it, but it definitely gives you something to think about.

And for the record- this is not a smoking rant. I honestly don't give a shit if anyone smokes. I buy them for my grandmother every month.

I don't really like a lot of federal law and I definitely do not like the idea of the government telling people what they can and cannot do... but the smoking argument brings up a lot of interesting points. Studies like this, assuming they are fully accurate, show that smoking is a health hazard and it impacts every one of us. Particularly when these smokers (and even non-smokers) get sick later on in life and need to utilize Medicare and Medicaid, two programs on the brink of collapse, which taxpayers are paying for.

For a smoker to say that "it isn't your business!" is not really true, it's everyone's business when that person is no longer able to pay for their health expenses caused by smoking.

Have you ever read a history book ?

Tobacco was a major crop in the beginning days of this country good or bad.

"Tobacco was the first crop grown for money in North America. In 1612 the settlers of the first American colony in Jamestown, Virginia grew tobacco as a cash crop. It was their main source of money. Other cash crops were corn, cotton, wheat, sugar, and soya beans. Tobacco helped pay for the American Revolution against England. Also, the first President of the U.S. grew tobacco."

You made the argument that since tobacco was used as a cash crop to pay for wars several hundred years ago that we should just leave it be.

You know I honestly don't care who smokes and I do not support the banning of smoking in private establishments... but you seem to be ignoring the whole concept of this study. You don't think it presents some interesting points?

Smoking causes heart attacks. Are you arguing that?
