Costa Rica and I suggest the Papagayo region, either the Four Seasons or the Occidental Grande...it's less crowded, yet still close to shopping, beaches, etc.

Costa Rica is amazing. You get more bang for your buck and there are two different coasts to go to. The wife and I usually spend 10 days down there and hop to a few different towns. I suggest Cahuita on the east coast if you want some Caribean flavored fun

All depends what you want to do. If you want to experience nature activities, Costa Rica wins hands down. If you are going for shopping, city, night life (non-whoring), safety then probably Cancun is for you.

Cancun is fun....but a tourist trap. If you want nightlife its probably better though. Costa Rica is incredible. I've been back there 9 times. Its the place if I were you.

If you come to cancun now you can most likely get some amazing deals. Plenty of things to see and do. Plenty of places to Visit with Ruins and such. Things have been slow here so you can most likely get some awesome deals.
