my dog killed a rat got a few questions.

Moomoo my mutt earned her keep once again. killing a rat that was in the kitchen. I live in a condo and my neighbors are fucking slobs. I found a hole behind the oven so I figure that where it came in from. Im going to close it up. She killed it, bit it and shook the shit out of it and dropped it on the floor yuck. Should I call the vet monday, she looks fine eating fine. Dont want her to get sick she is up to date on her shots.
Also has anyone tried natural repellants. I would like to put one in the wall before closing it up. I cant put steel wool because its right by the big oven outlet.

Shouldn't be a problem. Rabies would be the only really worry but if your shots are up to date it shouldn't be any problem.

I`m sure all is good what with the jabs being all up to date. Personally I would get my own doggy best friend down to the vets just to be on the safe side.

Only worry by going to the vets is the quarantine rules (I`m not sure how hard they are enforced in your country but I have read in the past that any pets that have come into contact with any virus maybe quarantined?).

I hope all works out ok mate. Please let us know.

what was said here, i concur...

i used to send my wife out into the woods to hunt for racoons.. she was bitten and got the rabies.. i had to put her down when she started foaming at the mouth one night while giving me a blowjob.. i have her head mounted on my wall in the den...

Yes, call the vet. It never hurts to be on the safe side.

Rats aren't just a problem for people who are "slobs". I had a maid once a week and had a horrible problem with them when we lived in East Cobb. Had over $2K in repairs to 2 cars because they crawled in there and ate the tubing trying to get to the liquids.

Which brings me to: call a professional. If you give them the rodent poison they sell in the stores they will go to great lengths to get to liquids - it dehydrates them to death - and/or they will die in your house.

These people next to me are big slobs from my backyard I can see in to their kitchen and the dishes are piled high in the sink. But I do understand what you are saying. I spoke to my mom who I bought the condo from. They had a problem here with rats, then one of the condos owners started feeding the stray cats. They had lots and lots of cats here but no more rats. Then they had the cats removed because they were annoying to some I guess. That was before I had moved here, I guess the rats figured its safe now. Im going to have a pro come we pay them a monthly retainer as part of the condo assoc. Everything I read online was to avoid poisons at all measures use traps. With poisons you can wind up with dead rats in walls or if the dogs finds the poisoned rat and eats it. You could have a dead dog.

There's no test for rabies and if your dogs shots are up to date there's nothing else you can do, except for blindly treat for rabies.

My dogs have killed bats, rabbits, rats, mice, squirrels, you name it they catch it. The first time it was a bat, I called my sister who's a vet. She said not to worry, as long as they've had their shots no problem.

the dog will be fine and id agree dont poison the rat then seal the hole warfarin (rat poison) will cause them to seek water and when they do drink it they die a pretty nasty death right on the spot, of course that may be in your neighbors house (serve them right) but it could be in the walls too....poison is more effective than traps but really you have a homeowners ass and this sounds like something they need to take care of....get an exterminator.

                                    Tony,

Two weeks ago my dog got into rats as well... She ended up with tape worms. She needed special antibotics for a week. Vet said she could have died had I not taken her in.

Don't risk it. Take your dog for a checkup.

                                        CALL the vet!

I doubt your slob neighbors have any poison out to kill the rats....but we lost our wonderful Cat last month, with a 1200.00 Vet bill ( right b 4 x-mas) he was an outdoor/indoor cat and killed everything, didn't eat them....but killed them and brought then to the sliding glass door to show all.

The vet kept asking is we had an anti-freeze around, which we don't...we have 2 toddler boys, everything is locked up.

Anyways, 1200.00 later...no idea what he got into, he's dead and we have no answers.

Actually, I heard not too long ago that there are very few reported cases of rabies coming from rats these days.

There's not much rabies around period in the developed World. Vets very rarely see a case of it.
