:stoned Warner pulls all videos from youtube

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081221/...warner_youtube

Warner Music Group ordered YouTube on Saturday to remove all music videos by its artists from the popular online video-sharing site after contract negotiations broke down.

The order could affect hundreds of thousands of videos clips, as it covers Warner Music's recorded artists as well as the rights for songs published by its Warner/Chappell unit, which includes many artists not signed to Warner Music record labels.

The talks fell apart early on Saturday because Warner wants a bigger share of the huge revenue potential of YouTube's massive visitor traffic. There were no reports on what Warner was seeking.

"We simply cannot accept terms that fail to appropriately and fairly compensate recording artists, songwriters, labels and publishers for the value they provide," Warner said in a statement.

YouTube is hugely popular, with more than 100 million viewers in the United States alone in October, according to comScore, a Web audience measurement firm.

Warner Music, home to artists including Red Hot Chili Peppers and rapper T.I., was the first major media company to negotiate a deal with YouTube in 2006. Its executives believe that deal gave the site legitimacy in the eyes of search giant Google Inc (GOOG.O) which bought it soon after for $1.65 billion.

As part of the original 2006 negotiation, Warner, Universal Music and Sony Music all took small stakes in YouTube pre-acquisition and profited when the Google acquisition closed.

The music companies typically get paid a share of any advertising revenue associated with the video and a per-play payment for every video viewed. The per-play fee is usually a fraction of a penny and with millions visiting YouTube everyday it was all expected to add up to a substantial amount.

But a source familiar with Warner Music's talks said the amounts it has been receiving from YouTube were "staggeringly low".

YouTube representatives did not immediately return calls for comment.

YouTube executives have spent most of 2008 stepping up efforts to develop revenue streams on the site partly in a bid to keep content partners happy. It has been in long negotiations with Warner on how best to split revenues until things came to a head in talks on Friday.

"Despite our constant efforts, it isn't always possible to maintain their innovative agreements," YouTube said in a statement on its blog about difficulties of music licensing. "Sometimes, if we can't reach acceptable business terms, we must part ways with successful partners."

YouTube also has agreements with Vivendi's (VIV.PA) Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI Music. Warner's move could see them also making tough demands for higher fees.

The demands could leave YouTube in a difficult position as it tries to balance the need to pay a reasonable fee to content partners, including TV and movie companies, and also generate enough return on the substantial investment needed to keep streaming millions of videos around the world.

And so it starts.....

One large company takes a stand and it can effect global change.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out long term.

so how does this work exactly, does it put the onus on Youtube to find and remove all of Warner properties on there site, without needing dmca notice for each specific one?

is that true??

they already were supplying videos to youtube for a share of profits, so all the videos are under a couple of accounts, they will just disable the accounts.

They must make some deal where they agree to secretly remove any warner content they dont supply and thus make money from thats why you dont find much content from artists/labels who are signed up with youtube that dont come from the label, artists that arent signed with youtube just get free raped.

cliffnotes, they are uploaded by warner so they are just asking to disable their own account, anyone with a youtube account can disable their own uploads at any time.

ok, I see it now

https://youtube.com/user/warnerbrosrecords

so are you saying that youtube selectively pulls user uploads of the same content, but will ignore user uploads of non-signed up labels? I hope some companies that have the legal resources are keeping track of this... maybe a huge class action suit representing 10000's of smaller artists and bands?

they must, i notice everytime a label was added all the videos from that label from users were suddenly gone. alot of time they dont allow embedding the videos ( because then they wont get a cut from the ads )

i.e. they removed a users video from public enemy then put the exact same video up from the label , but now it can't be embedded

Jesus there is some retardation. I FUCKING know who Rhcp are sheesh. You notice by your list that most recent thing is 2006 right? Almost 3 years ago now. I had their first 3 albums.

And its such irony when people say "your an idiot" shows your utter brilliance...

My favorite word in that is "potential" lol

"Warner wants a bigger share of the huge revenue potential of YouTube's massive visitor traffic."

Yeah "potential" That and a couple of bucks MIGHT get you a cup of coffee.

clever move by warner really , they first team up with youtube and get them to remove all the user uploaded warner content , in return they get all the same videos under warners account, now if they pull those videos bye bye half a billion video views including all the ones from users they used to have

I'm positive that they gained by the relationship in some way or another, both parties did. Warner simply has the upper hand, as do the other studios.

Imagine that... everything isn't "free" after all.

They need to make sure now no Warner owned video will be uploaded, right?

Did someone try to upload a Prince music video since he pulled them all?

it goes back to lots of traffic doesnt mean lots of money and they can get ads from the huge and rich mainstream business pool. Youtube has yet to make a profit.

Ya guess he is fairly large, but I mean I even watch mtv part of the day. I went on youtube and I know some of the songs he is featured on I guess. Still though would that really be peoples first choice of artists to list ?

Eric Clapton Depeche Mode, Chris Isaak, Linkin park, Metallica, Michael buble, R.E.M, Neil Young, Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, Stevie Nicks, The White Stripes, Tom Petty, Faith Hill, Goog Goo dolls, Green Day, Cher,
Blake Shelton, Brian McKnight, Deftones

T.I. ? its not like he is Jay Z or p diddy or whatever he goes by now. Just struck me as odd. lol

They will be back. Universal music has admitted it is making a mint with youtube, in an area (music videos) that used to be purely promotional and not make any money. I believe they stated their figures were in the 10's of millions with youtube and heading close to the 100 million/year mark. I don't know how viable youtube is with regular media (tv, movies, etc) but with music there is 0 doubt. Give it a few months at most, youtube was apparently close to a deal with them before they changed the terms at the last moment, with youtube's other music contracts up for renewal I guess they didn't want to make the concessions they wanted. They will agree on terms sooner or later though.

Where did you read that? I'd like to see that too. I think if Universal's music dept. was even making 100 million with everything they are doing these days I'd be shocked. The music industry has been pretty much dead in comparison to what it once was. Can you post a link to that article? 100 million a year on youtube...

Sorry should of posted it before but got lazy and didn't google it again.

- Rio Caraeff, executive vice president of Universal Music Group's eLabs, said the largest of the top recording companies is bringing in "tens of millions of dollars" from YouTube.

- Caraeff declined to give specifics on Universal's deal with YouTube, but a music industry source close to the label said Universal will likely book nearly $100 million in revenue from video streaming this year. That figure includes video-streaming money from all of the company's partners, such as iMeem, MTV, and MySpace. The source said, however, that most of the cash comes from YouTube.

- Universal's CEO, has led the industry to set up videos as a revenue stream. Since 2005, Universal has gone from making zero dollars on music videos to nearly $100 million.

I was a little surprised to, though not really considering how well I've noticed youtube's contentID system being employed for music content and the amount of views music gets on there. I doubt youtube is making much money off the music though, as I would expect pretty much all the ad money is going to pay for licensing and streaming costs.

Also I expect that to improve very quickly as well. Youtube is clearly focusing all out now on making their site suitable for more professional content with their content ID rollout, their focus on in video ads, their HD setup, widescreen, etc. 09 Should be an interesting year for youtube.

It worked for Comedy Centrals full episodes there (South Park).

But come on, those videos have millions of views, they might be a lot better off working out deals with YouTube on ad revenue sharing or whatever. They're cutting off the public. It's not like the average user is gonna download the .flv, rip out the audio and put it on his ipod.
