The Love Of Cheesy Horror Movies

People often wonder about people like me who live for bad movies....terrible acting, excessive gore, weak effects, sometimes shot on a home camcorder....

I wrote a three part article on it for Setgo, but people still ask me about this affinity I have for blood, babes, breasts, rubber monsters, bad toupes, 30 year old actors playing teens and killer mutant vegetables...

Well, there is a horror discussion board that is dedicated to horror movies and an amazing post that refuses to die, that captures the essense of what it is to love a truly bad movie (I'm talking Zombie Mutant Flesh Eaters bad and not Steel Magnolias sucks a goat bad)

This thread illustrates one man's insane fondness for a piece of celluloid toilet paper known as "Bloody Murder" The cover contains a man wearing a mechanics suit and hockey mask and is brandishing a chainsaw...bad ripoff or fun cheesy entertainment? You decide. The thread is mammoth but you will truly have a peak into the mind of those of us who say "Fuck Stephen Speilberg, bring us Fred Olen Ray, Herschell Gordon Lewis or Jim Wynorski!"

We did some 900 lines where kids could call in to listen to scary monsters, people screaming and stuff. We made a real cheezy 50's style black and white commercial for it which ran on MTV in the late '80s. It was funny as shit, and a lot of people actually called.

For me to enjoy a really bad shlock movie I have to have the feeling that everybody involved was aiming for much more, that they took the film as seriously as Francis Ford Coppola took Apocalypse now. That's what makes it good to me. I don't want the director to be in on the joke.

That's why that Frankenhooker movie doesn't look like I'd like it. It looks like it's an intentionally bad movie. Samuel Arkoff made movies like that, he was just a smart businessman who found a formula to make a lot of money. He never had any pretensions that he was making art.

Great Flick! I still have the talking video box, but sadly, it doesn't talk anymore...my kids wore it out....it was cool as shit, you pressed the button and it said "Wanna Date?"

Patty Mullins is so hot, I';d do her even with the neck stitches ;)))

eru, Fangoria is still alive and well, but expensive as fuckall....I used to go to all the Fango conventions and am thinking of hitting more. I loved those shows because you could meet people like Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Linnea Quigley, Tom Savini, etc. The best was An Evening With Vincent Price (only about a month before he died). It was great to meet the living legend...I still have pics around here somewhere, but my highlight was meeting Christopher Lee in the elevator and getting to quickly chat.

I used to get Fangoria back in middle school, but the sticker price was $$$. I went the website and they want $40 for a one-year subscription of 10 issues. That's not that bad -- I think they used to charge more.

For the most part, I agree that the good bad movies are those in which the director is seriously creating his masterpiece (or attempting to). But, camp movies (which are intentionally bad) can be fun too, it's just a different mindset when watching.

Some other good bad movies I enjoy that make others cringe are:
Battlefield Earth (one of the few big budget bad movies on my list)
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (the casting of Gunnar "Leatherface" Hanson as the leader of the chainsaw cult was pure genius.)
Anything Troma
Anything Fred Olen Ray
Anything Jim Wynorski (the only man to have a shower scene in every movie he has ever made)
Anything Herschell Gordon Lewis (ok, Gruesome Twosome is hard for even me to watch, but we'll forgive him the minor misstep after such classics as Wizard Of Gore, The Gore Gore Girls (Henny Youngman rules), 2000 Maniacs and the godfather of splatter movies: BloodFeast!)
Anything Frank Hennenlotter (ok, so his only movies are the Basket Case series and Frankenhooker)

Speaking of good bad movies, I finally got to see "The Pool" last night (called "The Swimming Pool" in Europe). For people like me who have a weak spot for slasher movies, this is a ncie throwback to the classic splatter movies, not bloodless drivel like "Scream" and "I Know What You Did...". It has all the standard cliches, bad acting and wooden dialog, but it delviers the goods when the machette starts to swing...let's just say, you'll always be a little apprehensive about sliding down a dark waterslide after watching this bad boy. The location is unique (a HUGE inddor swimming pool), the motive of the killer is very poor, but there are a few scenes that current watered-down Dawson's fucking Creek bullshit American slashers wouldn't touch. The movie is German made and or a directing debut, the movie is technically a good one, with great lighting, effects and tons of the red stuff....run, don't walk to NetFlix.com and put this bad boy at the top of your queue ;)))

There's a bit of a trend of that lately...porn stars in horror movies...in the 80's, you had a Penthouse Pet (Patty Mullins) in Frankenhooker, you had Madison (going by the name Madison Stone) in Evil Toons and Naked Obsession....

I know Jenna is in the upcoming "SamHain"...

could be a fun trend....

hmm, if porn and cheesy horror merged.....the GFY Sensitivy Police would have a coronary over a couple of us probably trying to cash in on it ;))))

I went to a Fango con a few years back in NYC. Didn't care too much for it. I haven't missed a Chiller Theatre con in the last five years though. They have them twice a year in New Jersey. The guests aren't as good as they used to be, but I did have a nice conversation with David Friedman at the last one a few weeks ago.

As far as magazines go, Rue Morgue is IMO the best horror mag there is. rue-morgue.com

there are some girls working in porn who have a little talent. He tells me this Violet Blue girl is really good in this movie, what he saw anyway.

It used to be 99% of porn girls were horrible actors but that's because up until the early - mid 90's porn movies were all scripted crap with the god awful dialogue. Like sixth graders acting in a school play, concentrating on remembering their lines more than actually acting.

But with the advent of gonzo porn movies which now are probably 75% of all porn flicks made, girls are basically getting good at improvisational acting. They're playing themselves for the most part but it's still acting and it's much more natural. I think some of them are getting good at it because they get so much experience doing it. I don't think any of them will be in an Academy Award nominate film but some of them might have good 'B' movie careers or even do well in edgy small budget independent films.
