I have to ring in here about the Vaios. The display on mine cuts to solid color screen in the most inopportune times. The only way to restore the display to something usable is to hard reboot it. I've had this Sony Vaio for about 2 years and the issue started about 6 months in. It looks nice though. But it's a roll of the dice to be able to remember the key combo to save work when the display cuts out.
tbh most of the laptops sold now, even the cheapass ones, work fine for work stuff. its only when you wanna play games that you have to worry about what laptop to get. as long as it has a couple gigs of ram it should do most work/web/email type things.
