Go back to 32 bit, it will solve your problems.

Vista Ultimate 32 bit on an 8 core has been fucking bad ass. I hated XP when it came out and got used to it, and now that I got Vista I'd never go back to XP.

That being said, I don't really explore the OS. I just load a few programs, but so far Vista has been much faster for me, and I like the layouts better. I seem to be able to navigate the folder structures better in Vista than I was in XP.

Does anybody know if a system with the same specs except for being a 32-bit and 64-bit encode video faster?

Well it should IF the software you are using to encode supports 64bit. Heck some software doesn't even support multi processors. So the answer is yes, if the software supports it and uses it.

FFS just install XP :)

That may be easier said than done ...

A lot of new 64 bit quads are chipped so that they will only run Vista .. :Oh crap

I was thinking of getting Flash CS4 and putting it on a 64 bit Vista, AMD Phenom 9950, 4GB of ram to encode video to FLV.

It currently takes me about 5 minutes to encode a 1 minute video to FLV.

boneprone 11-26-2008 11:34 AM

I have a 64 bit HP Quad and its rocket fast.
I love it.

DutchTeenCash 11-26-2008 11:36 AM

xp

vista has too many issues for sure

boneprone 11-26-2008 11:39 AM

Its odd becasue some people have major issues, some not at all.
I wonder what the differences are.

Your first mistake was buying a Gateway.

Slick 11-26-2008 12:22 PM

Hopefully I'll have no problems here on Friday when I build my new system. Every 3 years I build myself a new monster system and this time is no exception :) I got the new Intel Core i7 965 quad core CPU and Vista ultimate 64-bit, so we'll see how that goes.

Take it back to bestbuy and drop down to 32 bit vista. 64 bit is what is probably giving you issues. If you just got it and its having issues they should take care of it. :2 cents:

This is your issue...

same here

version5 11-26-2008 01:45 PM

I have a quad core with a little more power than urs but i'm telling u to go to XP like now lol.

I spent 6 months using vista until 2 weeks ago when i thought fuck this shit i'm going back to XP and my PC works so nicely now. Everything is fast smooth and I feel like this PC can do some proper damage now!

Turboface 11-28-2008 02:35 PM

Mozilla has a new version of FireFox called Minefield, which is for 64-bit machines. I installed it and it's blindingly fast. However don't plan on installing the Flash plug-in, because it isn't compatable. It's for x86 only. It's amazing that four years after x64 became available Adobe still hasn't managed to release an x64 version!

HomerSimpson 11-28-2008 07:02 PM

just put 32-bit version of Vista, since maybee your drivers or some other software you have installed is not 64 compatible...

Rochard 11-28-2008 07:50 PM

I have a quad processor HP computer and I'm running Vista.... I love it!
