EDMONTON - It wasn't a bird, and it sure as heck wasn't a plane, but whatever was in the sky over western Canada on Thursday night was very exciting for the people who saw it.

In Edmonton and across the Prairies, hundreds of people reported seeing a bright flaming object light up the sky around 5:30 p.m. local time. It was variously described as green, yellow, purple or blue, and appeared as either an explosion or an object streaking through the sky.

Sightings came from across the Prairies; from as far south as Medicine Hat, Alta., to as far north as Beauval, Sask. - 600 kilometres from Edmonton.

I actually saw something very similar to that this summer when at the outdoor movie night at the park, a bunch of people saw it and we were all like "what the fuck". At first it looked like a big bottle rocket but then you realize it waaaaay too big.

I seen a pretty awesome fire ball fall from the sky up in Bobcaygeon a few years ago. Blew up and turned orange and green like that. Wasn't that big though. Hope they find something.

I realize the size and speed of it, but still.. it lights up the entire sky in a blink of an eye.

it was going really fast, then it starts breaking up as it comes through the atmosphere. When it got really bright it was basically the whole rock falling apart.

hey we had the same thing happen here in the south, New Orleans, was it the same thing in the sky we saw here?

Meteor has heads tilting skyward

It was a plane -- crashing. It was a "flaring" at a local refinery. Nope, the glowing object in the sky Thursday came from much farther away.

The thing plummeting to earth within view of the air traffic control tower at the Louis Armstrong International Airport in Kenner "apparently was a meteor," said Roland Herwig, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration's southwest region.

Some residents speculated a plane had crashed. Others thought it might be flames from a refinery shooting in the sky, a procedure taken to prevent damage to machinery.

At least one air traffic controller, though, saw it, Herwig said.

"At dusk, while looking out of the west window, someone in the tower saw a bluish-green light moving from east to west: a meteor," Herwig said. "And it completely dissipated before making contact with the ground."

they immediately said it was a meteor, and there was very little mention of it after this short article...

Wow if it was seen in New Orleans all the way to Canada, that had to be a big meteor you would think. What's crazy if it was big enough to be seen all the way across the entire continent and no one knew it was coming. Not NASA, EU Space agency or any of the other scientist around the world. Makes you feel secure that they know what's gonna hit us..

That's assuming it was the same object in both New Orleans and Canada. May have been two separate fireballs. They're not all that uncommon - just rare to catch on camera.

Hmm... Pretty weird how it's flashing and doing weird colors like near explosion or magnesium ignition just prior to hitting the ground... You'd think that would only happen shortly after passing through the atmosphere. I'm not an astrologist so I could be wrong.
