WTF is with prices these days. They don't make sense!

I just went out to buy a pair of workout pants. Nothing special, just those nylon warm up pants for going to and from the gym.

$60 with tax at Sports Authority.

I can get a new Blackberry phone, with a built in still camera, flash, video camera, touch screen, voice recognition, internet browser, texting, all that shit, for ONLY $199.

So for the price of the super high tech Blackberry I can barely get 3 pairs of workout pants which were sewn together in some sweat shop and have less than a penny's worth of material!

Am I the only one who finds that crazy.

I wish they made high-tech clothes, then maybe I could get a pair of jeans for less than $200

I see your point but tech and "offline economy" products' pricing have always gone in different directions. If cars followed the features and price trajectory of CPUs, we'd have cars that would get 1000000000 to the gallon and cost $100

Moore's law doesn't usually apply to non-tech products

                    It is simple business.

You will pay $60 for a pair of workout pants and you will have them for a long time. Months at the very least, perhaps even years. So you could assume you will only buy a few pair a year.

The Blackberry only costs $199 and you love the price and think it is a great deal. Then you plunk down $100 a month for the service.

3 pair of workout pants per year - round $180
Blackberry plus 1 year of service - around $1400

It is just like getting Direct TV. They will give you the dish and the DVR and receiver for free as long as you sign an agreement that you will buy their service for at least 1 full year.

I just can't go inside a wal mart anymore.

The parking lot is full of trash (garbage) and the inside looks like Ellis Island circa 1905. At least the ones by me.

I just get a bad vibe from that place. I know some pretty wealthy people who shop there, but I just cant. So I'm not dogging on anyone who does shop there, it's not a class thing. Anyway, it's not like I went to a boutique, I went to Sports Authority which I thought was like a blue collar department store.

Human psychology. People will pay a premium for fashion.

Related to that is the aspect of "perceived value" - in some instances a higher priced item may viewed as more desirable by the consumer despite a lower priced, similar item being readily available nearby.

Do you live in a bad area? When I lived in Colorado there were 2 Walmarts within mins of each other. One was like walking into the slums of Mexico the other was not that bad.

Very intelligent response. Natural economics at play. The 'cheaper' device is a gateway product to further upsells. Whereas the pants are fungible and isn't much of a gateway to upsells.
