				Going Ubuntu
I am pondering going from Windows Vista to using ubuntu completely. Has anyone here done the switch? Any unexpected problems with drivers / software? What kind of photo and video editing options do you have with ubuntu? Will most software work or have a mirror application for linux? Any input on the matter is welcome |

				 | Try running ubuntu via vmware on your windows box for a while first - get used to it, learn your way around, try out some apps, make some beginner mistakes before you put ubuntu on a real computer. |

				 | I've done it, converted 50 workstations to Ubuntu. It's great. Cut down on the spyware and bullshit tremendously. It could use more productivity enhancement tweaks though but I'm sure that's confined to a large workstation environment. Go for it! |

				 | I have a desktop at home running ubuntu/xp dual boot. I run gimp on ubuntu and yes to the FF plug ins. Ubuntu is so stable and picks up hardware much easier then windows. My main machines are a 17" Mac laptop and a Mac G5 though I love OSX

				 | I have 2 boxes. a windows xp box and a linux box I wouldnt bother trying to completely swap over to linux as you may find a lot of things dificult to do but it really depends on what you wanna do. just throw in an extra hard drive and do a dual boot I actualy use fedora and have done for the past 3 years. ubuntu is cool too.

				 | Try http://www.opensuse.org/en/ Even that the company that builds Ubuntu spawned with 30 million funding, they still lack a decent usability project manager, and this completely renders their product to a crawl. SuSE on the other hand is made by Novel and always has been intended for working and production rather than having to tweak stuff all day long to make it functional.

				 | what I hate about ubuntu is it doesnt have the root gui I would recomend fedora any day. red hat/fedora has been a leader for many years. http://fedoraproject.org/ I also recomend a dual or triple boot rather than trashing windows alltogether.

				 | to those who care... Keep in mind that running Ubuntu or any other Linux/FreeBSD installation from inside a virtual box is not the same as running it by itself. Many things will be different. Especially your connection to the Internet. You can run Photoshop 2 with Wine in Linux... But trying to install it under a virtual platform is fucking hell on wheels! |

				 | I have an ubuntu VM and have been learning all I can about it, installing apps, fucking around with the terminal and what not. Shit looks very sexy and its hella stable even with a bunch of cute-ware enabled (visual effects) - I have found replacements for almost all of the software I need, except SEO shit. This is what I am planning to do.... Get a decent laptop (quad core with at least 4gb of ram) put ubuntu as the host OS and run xp as a guest, that way I could give xp 2gb of memory and half of the CPU to run whatever program I need to run there.. that should be enough to get those few windows-exclusive programs working in a virtual instance while I enjoy the stability of the penguin box |

				 | VirtualBox is good for running Windows on a Linux host. As long as you're okay with running a binary-only version (it's still freeware) you can get a version that works with USB devices from virtualbox.org. FWIW, Fedora 13 was the first desktop operating system I've ever used where my bluetooth headphones worked out of the box without any configuration on my part. I plugged in the usb bluetooth device turned on the headset and clicked scan for devices. This is between Ubuntu, Mandrake, Fedora, OS X, Windows XP, and Windows Vista.

				 | You could also try running Linux Mint...I liked Ubuntu and used it for work but I recently installed Linux Mint and I have to say that I absolutely love it...it's everything Ubuntu is and more. If you want a distro that won't hold your hand and would like to learn more about linux in general you could try out Arch Linux which is great. With Arch Linux you can completely customize your system and only install the applications YOU want. I also like OpenBSD for use as a web server, it's a *bsd that is really into security. |

				 | You won't necessarily have to run Wine. In fact it's best that you try not to and instead use native applications. Ubuntu is a good Distribution to start learning Linux as is Mint. However keep in mind that there are many other choices out there and when you get more experienced with Linux you may find them more to your liking. You'll find that there is a bit to learn and that it won't be completely effortless but if you stick with it things become much easier over time. http://ubuntuforums.org is the best place to go for help with Ubuntu or to read about it. |
