contests are fun specially when you have an extra time to join, win or lose you can show your talent to other prospect clients who might need your design services. just my 2 cents.

if you run a contest you will see that the pros win more than once, so they are earning $xxx in many cases

No there rarely is not. Even if there is, just win more than once with same company and walla you have reached the minimum payout. Typically though it is just free money that will be paid out to keep the damn thread at the top of the board.
