Getting close to achieving a life goal.

I always set goals for myself and work hard to attain them. One of the big goals I set was to be in a position where I could travel more. The idea I had was that instead of just vacationing I would move somewhere for a few months and go somewhere different every couple of years. For example. Maybe this first time I movie to New York for 6-8 weeks then come back home. Then in a couple of years move to Paris for a couple of months then come back home. I think two months is enough time to really get a feel for the place and explore it. All I need to work is a cell phone, laptop and internet connection so I could work during the evenings and spend my days and weekends out exploring wherever I was. I think doing something like this every couple of years would be a fun and interesting way to see the world.

I'm pretty close to being able to do this. I had to pay off some bills and get some other things taken care of but maybe this summer I can take the first test run.

Any suggestions where I should look into going down the road?

Sounds like fun. Atleast if you are single and making enough to support yourself

Exactly. Emphasis on the single part. Hard to do that when you're married unless you married a person who's into traveling for long periods of time.

Follow your dream, bro. I suggest starting with all 50 of the US states.

Yep I am single at the moment. You never know what the future will bring, but I have no kids so I don't have a lot tying me down. I have friends and family where I am living so I want to stay in this area, but I think it will be cool to see different parts of the world.

Things are going pretty well and I am working hard. Australia is on my list. I will have to hook up with you when I get over there for sure.

Sounds a good plan. Paris is very pricey though, maybe alternate places like that with some cheaper trips.

I suggest visiting Japan. You can do a homestay or even get a rail pass to explore the country. It's easy to get lost in Tokyo.

Thanks for all the kind words and suggestions. Southeast Asia is on my list for sure. Before I go anywhere I will be researching and seeing where to stay and stuff like that. hopefully talking to people who are there/have been there to see what they suggest.

Looks like my list is growing too. For some reason Japan slipped my mind, but I would love to go there.

1st World countries are boring - tehy're good for a 1 week vacation, if you want to stay 3 months or more choose something like Thailand, the Philippines, Braizl etc

                                        Tips:

                                        * Never pay for rooms by the day. ALWAYS negotiate a weekly or monthly term.

                                        * Always find out up front if they will charge you for water, power or internet.

                                        * Pack light. You will not miss anything you leave behind.

                                        * Don't forget to pack a little photo book of your family and friends. This will be the ONLY thing you will miss.

                                        * If you don't have it already, get SKYPE and pay for US number. Assuming you are from the USA, then your friends and family, assuming you have any, can call you free.

                                        * Carry more than one ATM card and be aware of when they expire. Chances are your bank WON'T send a new card abroad.

                                        Congrats!

Good info, I'd also add to that to ensure you use a 4-digit PIN before you leave. My bank allows up to 8 digits, so I used 8, and then when I was in Monte Carlo my card didn't work in a bunch of machines.. Finally found one that magically accepted my 8 digits. Phew.

Sometimes I wish my job wasn't tied to specific places. Although I can and have to travel a lot, it's to the same places

Some great info for me in these posts. Thanks to all for posting. I have a lot to consider. Hopefully I can take my first trip sometime this upcoming summer and see how it goes. It I enjoy it (and I think I will) then I plan to head out every couple of years somewhere different. It will be an adventure for sure and I appreciate all the good advice from people who have spent time in other countries.
