They're addicted to a drug. I doubt many of them WANT to smoke when they're pregnant. Just up and quitting? I'm sure a few are able to, but most of them have probably already tried and aren't able to. I'm not making excuses for them btw. I just know how hard it is to quit smoking. I'd bet 99% of them WOULD quit smoking immediately if they could.
Then so would the introduction of all other forms of pollution to or around a pregnant women. Yup even if the person producing the pollution is not the person who is pregnant. The should be subject to the same abuse standards or harming another and get fines, imprisonment, etc. No limiting it to just smoking.
I smoked before I got pregnant and after I did, the smell of the cig smoke made me sick. I still can't stand the smell today. But I think women should try and stop while they are pregnant.
People in general are pretty damn stupid. Here where I live almost no one uses car seats and they are laughing at me because I do.
Same goes for smoking, they just don't get it. I see young moms in the park with their newborns puffing on a cig right next to the baby.
Way too much money is made on cigs and no government has the balls to ban it compleatly.
We were in a Chili's once..
Preggo woman was drinking WHITE WINE.. she got her glass refilled 3 times..
As hubby and I were leaving, I asked her,
"So you're fine with sentencing your baby with a life as a retard?"
so true , they should also charge mothers who eat fatty high cholesterol foods, and mothers that speed, jaywalk or drive oversized suv's, or if they live in a polluted city, wear poor soled shoes or try and go up stairs more than 1 at a time.

Nobody is suggesting it should be government regulated, that is just a cop out what you wrote there.
A woman who does anything knowingly to cause potential harm to her child she is a pathetic individual who should have never put her self in a position to get pregnant in the first place. You would be hard pressed to find anything more harmful to a developing fetus then ingesting thousands of carcinogens and chemicals.
Just a "funny" observation directed at no one in particular...
Many of the people that think a pregnant woman smoking, drinking, doing drugs, etc. is child abuse (it is), are pro "choice" (I'm pro life, but that is another issue).
This essentially means that they are pro choice, UNLESS the woman decides to keep the baby.
You guys are aware that quitting during pregnancy causes high risk for the foetus right ? I know two woman that have misscarried because of this.

First of all, smoking is an addiction, so while it's certainly bad, it's not as easy to stop as many think. It's a drug, not something they do for fun to harm their unborn. Knowingly, yes, willingly no. Second, there are things MUCH more harmful, e.g. alcohol, even in smallest doses it is more harmful than smoking.
I'm not here to defend smoking, but if I have a look at how some people treat their children, how they neglegt them, how they beat them up, then smoking while pregnant is just one of many problems and certainly not the worst one, which is domestic violence.

On top of this, I'm kind of curious... when did we first discover that smoking is bad for health? When did women stop smoking due to pregnancy? I'm just thinking that women were probably smoking during pregnancy for years and years and years... what were the results of that?
By the way, I am against smoking as a whole but I'm not really keen on telling people what to do... whether I agree with what they are doing or not.

everything i mentioned can cause potential harm, and infact some would argue they are way way more dangerous.

how about ingesting millions of carcinogens and chemicals ?
But seriously , how do you see it being different than a mother who drives an oversized suv who's car burns carcinogens and chemicals for EVERYONE to breathe. Maybe its just me but i would think poisoning everyone is much worse than poisoning 1 person .. and thats completely ignoring the fact suv accidents kill more babies than smoking does.
Last week, I was in a bar and this woman was eyeballing me....Later I was standing by the announcement booth when she won a raffle and came up laughing and talking loudly...
I spoke to her and we hit it off......As she was on her way back to sit with her girls, I asked her what she was drinking and she said Lambrusco...She couldn't drink HARD liquor because she was pregnant and she insisted that she had no boyfriend.
I just finished my drink and walked out the door.

1 billion people > 1 baby
If you think wearing flat soled shoes is more harmful to an unborn child than it's mother smoking then I don't know what else to say to you.
Car pollution is bad but right now our entire society is based on the car. People and car manufacturers are trying to curb what they know is wrong by using electric cars. It would be impossible to change the entire situation of our car dependent society over night but what we can do as individuals is start using more public transport, ride a bike, walk, car pool or whatever. If you have that much of a problem with pollution, the effects of which would be minuscule compared to those on a fetus from a smoking mother, then going and live in the jungle somewhere. Adults have choices, unborn children do not.
I quit when I got pregnant, it was terribly hard but I knew it had to be done. If a woman can't stop smoking just for the time she is pregnant, she is lazy and weak minded! Probably indicative of what is to be after the baby is born. Not saying every mom who does it is going to be a bad mom, but.....it sure makes people think so

that must be why there are more suv's now than 20 years ago ... and that would also explain the car dealerships all having mostlt electric cars ( oh yah they dont )

hmm i didnt say anything about car dependant society , explain to me why a mother can't not drive an suv, just the same as she can't smoke. Its pretty easy for both , she simply throws away the key / pack of smokes

are you serious , i hope if you really believe that you have some sort of evidence to bolster that claim, i dont mean you have to prove it to me , just yourself maybe.

and that will solve the problem of suv pollution , oops not..

exactly , a mother can choose to live in a polluted city driving and suv with slippery shoes possibly putting them at risk for disease and accidents , or she can choose not to, just the same as with smoking , the only difference is more people actually die from accidents and disease than from smoking
