You may want to check with the airlines to see if they will even allow your dog to fly. There are certain breeds that are now not allowed on planes.

Im just getting this done heres the steps:

Your dog MUST have a health certificate within 7 days of travel
Only crates are allowed per flight - so call ahead otherwise someone else may have taken the spot.
Must be under 20lbs - otherwise its a pain
Must pay $100 each way.

I sat next to a girl on a plane that I thought had tourettes until I noticed her little dog tucked underneath the seat letting out an occasional yap. I think that was Southwest.

If you're taking it in the cabin, there's usually a limit of 2 dogs per cabin (1st and coach) so get tell then you're bringing a dog ASAP. I've flown with one of my dogs - the old female. We were in first and she's only 13 pounds and everyone thought she was cute except for all the snorting sounds, lol. She's the only one of all 4 of mine I'd get on a plane with.

If you're planning on putting it in the belly of the plane, many airlines won't put them there during certain times of the year.

Also get some Xanax for the dog from your vet and get a carrier on wheels - 13 pounds doesn't sound like much until you're carrying it through an airport.

Friends of mine fly their lab back and forth from South America to ATL a few times a year and don't seem to have any problems.

omg that Jug is incredibly cute (the Lug is cute too)

I bet the Jug can be a handful of energy though, those jack russells always seem to be on a mission following their noses somewhere..... you have to be careful watching them because they forget everything other than what their nose is telling them

I spent a semester in Paris, and we took our dog with (and on to Amsterdam). Come to think of it, my dog is better travelled than a lot of my family...
Anyhow, you have to check with the airline, because everyone has different regulations, particularly about size/weight and it really depends on where you are going and where you are coming from. Some places weigh the dog in the carrier too, so take that into consideration. On the way back to the states, the weight limit was less than on the way there, and some airlines make you pay in advance, while others will only take your money at the airport.
Don't take anyone's advice on what you have to do, as every situation can be different and you'll regret showing up at the airport with things not in order. Call the airline you are traveling and find out for yourself.

seen them around horses before too, they seem to have no concept of cautiousness or erring on the side of safety, running up to 1000 lb animals like its no big deal

I took my cat on a plane, and it was stressful only because -- well, she's a cat. She was nervous about being in the carrier and when I took her out to go through security she jumped out of my arms and ran under the x-ray table. But she was fine on the plane, and I'm sure if your dog is on a leash he'll be fine going through security too.

Check your airlines. I did not have to do that. It depends on the dog, the size and the time of year. Winter can cause troubles. PHX will be okay, but if it is too cold up in Canada you could have issues.
