I use RSS and social networking to keep up to date with so much and so many people I really wonder what I'd do without all of this information. Do you rely on it, and do you know others that do in terms of from a BUSINESS stand point?
Is social networking a part of life now?

No.
Blogs are blogs; Youtube is Youtube, Twitter is for people too distracted to have a blog or post retarded shit on Youtube. Most of it's highly pointless, and hardly useful.
I would not call RSS social networking, however, I'd call it a half-assed standard that people abuse for both useful, and pointless purposes.Comment

Totally. I was on MSN with a friend today and she invited my man and I to sushi friday night. I said I'll talk to my man and get back to her. She said, "Ok, so should I send you a Facebook invite for Friday?"
Der? She already invited me! I don't get it!
EDIT: Ok, my bad for not reading. This post wasn't business related, just general Facebook frustration.email: [email protected]Comment

Pretty much.
I'm in agreeance that RSS and social networking are different, but they are somewhat linked in a sense. All of this real-time data is just one big way of being connected to everything related to you, your industry, your friends etc.Comment

Give me a few examples of how any of the social networking sites I've mentioned help you.

I agree, everything we have seen up until now is just pointless novelty. I don't think anyone has yet captured what is truly possible with the internet.No.

Honestly, do you think posting "Hey, love your profile" on someone's myspace page is that revolutionary? It's cool and people like it, but it's nothing more than a novelty.jim (at) amateursconvert . com Amateurs ConvertComment

It's revolutionary in that everyone can now contribute, on any level, pretty much anywhere... The shape of the internet is being controlled by the masses... and they've decided that this...I agree, everything we have seen up until now is just pointless novelty. Lol. But it reminds of me back in the 90's. I started a computer store and our big claim to fame was in-home setup as computers were actually hard to set up back then. You could tell people all about the features and what they could do on their computer and their faces would glaze over. But when you slipped a music CD in and it played they thought it was the coolest thing ever. I have no idea why, but I saw that over and over again.
I think it's a very similar thing with social networking. It seems cool because people don't really understand the internet and that myspace is actually not really a big deal. What it did do though is make communication over the internet something that regular people do, not just nerds.
I think some mix of networking and mobile devices could be truly revolutionary. But what we have right now isn't anywhere close to what it is being hyped as.Last edited by mynameisjim; 11-03-2008, 03:16 PM.jim (at) amateursconvert . com Amateurs ConvertComment

I don't exactly think "real-time" data is as great as everyone thinks it is. Leaves a lot of room for mistakes, and then corrections, and then more mistakes, and then more corrections. A task that should only take five minutes when it is complete now takes 30 minutes.

I must have missed something. I did not read it to mean that RSS and social networking necessarily went hand in hand. I don't think one has much [if anything] to do with the other.
